Camera Comparison: Pixel 2 vs DSLR!

In this video I compare the best camera on a smartphone (Google Pixel 2) with a "pro-sumer" DSLR the Canon 80D.
Pixel 2 was impressive because of how well it fares against the Canon. Its software processing really makes it stand out and in terms of exposure and in low light it often beat the DSLR due to auto HDR and noise reduction processing. The portrait mode is also very impressive however the results are still far from the DSLR's.
The Canon 80D did really well, as expected, I know I didn't have the best lens but that did not hold it back much. Its best feature is definitely its versatility and not to forget the very accurate and natural canon colors 😍.
As an "average consumer" you don't need to buy a DSLR or even a 'proper' camera at all to get amazing pictures.
As for anyone who is more serious about photography a smartphone can't replace a DSLR (yet 😉) but they will be able to appreciate how good the Pixel 2's images are.

You're already making a mistake in this comparison. You seem to be completely ignoring the lens used in the canon. It's an 18-135 kit lens, which is a really standard zoom from canon which isn't sharp (they do not resolve the full 24mp of the 80D sensor). Not only that but kit lenses don't have a fast aperture. If you spend this kind of money on a DSLR you're going to want to pair it with a good lens.

Lenses determine the optical sharpness of the image, the sensor simply converts that analog signal (photons) into a digital signal (pixels).

Not only that but you're comparing unprocessed RAW vs multishot processed JPEGs.
Yes, the Pixel does a fantastic job, but JPEGs do not offer the same level of flexibility that RAW files have, again, something you're going to want to do if you have a DSLR.

Good content. I know there are people who will rush to question your comparison of a phone camera and a DSLR camera. I like the way you decide to compare the two cameras just to know and see which one is better when it comes to the number of tries and picture quality without having to look at numbers.
If I was to choose which one I would go for, I would not even think twice about it. I would straight away go for the Google Pixel.

If u have a good phone and ur satisfied wth it u can go for Canon or if u dnt have a good phone and either a camera plus u want a portable all pusrpose thing u can go for pixel2

Nice upgrade Darius for bringing a more serious & up-to-date DSLR to the comparison, but I hope next time you go to the next level and take pictures with both devices in their full potential. i.e : using all manual settings necessary in the dslr and the phone, whatever they have, because that's what happens in reality !

How much can you really bring up the shadows or reduce a white sky with raw? I'm guessing it's still possible to clip an image so that it is not salvageable?
