In this video we look at potting with side spin. We look at why it is so easy to miss when playing with side, and how we need to adjust the aim to compensate for the side. The shots are carried out on a 7ft UK 8 ball table but most of the same principles apply to both american pool and snooker.

He just made a big complication very simple. I blame myself for not seeing this video any earlier. Great advice. Thank you very much !

This is the advice I've been needing. I have definitely been trying to use side spin to much, instead of looking for another option.

All the videos I’ve watched, all the forums I’ve read, this is the most concise and accurate representation of side spin and it has helped me a lot, thanks again buddy.

HUGE thanks for this video. Some other YT Pool channels deep dive into this, which is great and all, but they never talk about how impractical spin is in 90% of situations or how advanced you need to be to calculate NOR how there are far better things in pool to work on FIRST.

Thanks for this!

By far the best video I have seen on how to apply side. And I've seen many!

Completely agree, some players I play with or against use side every shot and it's just not needed. Keep the game as simple as u can

Light bulb moment 💡.... I have been overdoing the side spin over the years and on occasion miscued or missed vital shots that were sitters. The stun or slight bottom shot has become my new favourite shot. Thanks😊

All of the things said here are finally sinking in. A very good lesson concerning side. Thank you.

Lesson only use side when the cushion is the first point of contact and you need to change the available angles (getting out of snookers etc) or for swerve shots or just to show off. Great vid.

Sidespin? Try to avoid it.As a amateur poolplayer i couldn't agree more.I play local tournements every month and it amazes me how many players that are way better then me, miss crucial shots and give away games because they try to use sidespin on every shot.I stick to follow, draw and adjust speed for cueball control.Works good enough for me.Thx for the great video.

Another superb video. Particularly useful to be aware of alternatives to using side. Although I am pretty competent at potting - one shot that I keep inexplicably missing are simple almost straight pots into the middle when using a lot of power let alone combined with spin. The unforgiving hard plastic middle pockets on a pool table don’t appear to absorb the power like traditional snooker pockets and appear more likely to kick the ball out? Do you agree or is the only reason poor technique on my part?😢

Can also use side spin if you can’t quite see the potting angle, as the spin does transfer over to the object ball.

I don’t know if Fargo is used in English style pool but I think the correct approach would be if they do use Fargo concentrate on center Draw and follow if you have a Fargo of 0 to 550 550 is where you start to smooth your stroke out where deflection is not as much of a factor. It makes it really hard because you guys use such a small cue ball compared to the object ball so the lighter the ball the more deflection you’re gonna get when I played English Pool and I use the same size Cue Ball as the object ball I could use as much side span as I wanted but when I went to that undersize cue ball like everybody loves to play with my game really went down. I was speaking with a fellow Poolplayer he was asking me why I was so upset I said the ball does not play natural you can’t factor where the direction of the ball is going to go based on top middle bottom it holds the tangent line way too long and you can’t push through the ball .Enough ranting all you have to do if you’re using side span is compensate for the throw affect and the deflection. so you need to have the correct bridge Distance and maybe implement what they call backhand English it would take me probably one week to get comfortable with it if I was to play British style pool again with the small ball. You are correct, conditions change when you’re using spend that’s why a lot of the pros now don’t use a lot of spin but the guys that played like champions know how to spin the ball if you want to play like a champion you’ll learn how to shoot with Spin in all conditions. The problem is when somebody Learns how to spintroniques ball they Every shoot with English you only shoot English when you it is necessary for that particular shot if you watch a lot of the pros I’m sure they shoot with one or 2 mm of outside English when they’re cutting balls to negate a thing called collision induced throw a lot of pros will do this automatically their stroke is so smooth enough that they don’t get deflection.

Side spin is far more useful when playing snooker because of the enormous size of the table. Pool tables are so small that it's far easier to force narrower and wider angles to the desired area of the table without using side. Some of the world's greatest pool players, however, use side amazingly well when forcing incredible position on the cueball to get out of tricky situations where it's otherwise almost impossible to get the cueball where you want it for the next shot.

Side spin can be useful even when the cue ball doesn’t come into contact with a cushion. The cue ball reacts differently off of the object ball, so you can create paths for the cue ball to travel which wouldn’t of being possible with only the middle of the white.

Excelent video. But it's missing the explanation about swerve and spin induced throw as a definite factor along with the squirt or deflection that you cover in the video.

But the production and the video format is awesome!!
