John Petrucci Mark V Live Rig Tour 2011

John Petrucci's guitar tech Matt 'Maddi' Shieferstein walks us through the signal path and gear in John's Mark V rig for their 2011 tour of A Dramatic Turn of Events.

@Aristowi These means that the effects loop out of the Main head goes out to the other head in the loop return so it goes directly to the power section of the mark V. then that goes to another cab.

@Aristowi The amps have a preamp and a power amp section. Very simply put, the guitar goes into the pre-amp section of the amp and this is the part that will add distortion and the tone controls and then goes to the power amp section to amplify it.

Most amps u cant split the two but on the mesa boogies u can take the line out after the preamp and then run it into whatever power amp you like (some sound different). Or take the preamp signal straight to the mixing desk for recording if u want

@abrahamflako11 his rig is in one side, but once it gets mic'd up the sound comes from the speakers around the stage, he uses stereo not only for sound sources, but to make the effects more interesting.

What does he mean when he says that the second amp is used as a power amp? I am not familiarized with the term. And if the two cabinets are set in stereo, why is just one of them mic'd?
I'd love to see a full explanation about his rig and connections but I learn a lot with these videos anyway. Thanks in advance.

John uses a combination of a Shure SM-57 and a Royer 121. The ultimate blend is up to the front of house engineer.
