I once had a roommate that owned a large white male cockatoo as a pet. I mostly ignored the bird and visa versa. We left the cage open while we were home, but he mostly remained in the cage. One day I came home, cracked open a beer and poured it into a glass. The bird was making more noise that usual, so I went over for a look. He leaned out of the cage and went straight for my beer with his beak! That's when I realized he had no water. I filled up his water and rubbed his head while he drank up.


After that, I read the bird care book my friend owned and realized my roommate was not doing the best job. So everyday, I made sure he had water, food, treats... And all that led to, companionship. After just a few days, the bird would come out of his cage everyday and walk up onto my chest as I lay on the couch. He would often fall asleep as I rubbed his head watching TV. It was nice until my roommate moved out and away to another state.


About 10 years later, I went to visit my old friend. As soon as I sat on the couch, the bird was on the way to his old spot, climbing up my legs and resting on my chest as I rubbed his head. Companionship, gratitude, that is what I felt.
