Welcome back for another edition of On The Line, The Line's latest podcast offering. Each week, On The Line will bring you an extended conversation with Matt Gurney or Jen Gerson and a guest — or guests! — that can speak with authority on whatever is in the news.

And this week, in something of a break from the routine, we're here with good news. There are ways we can build this country and make it stronger. And a group of Canadians isn't waiting for a task force or government panel to do it. They're getting to work.

Daniel talks about how the experience of COVID-19 showed him what Canada can accomplish, but also how hard it is to get Canadians to see a threat coming. He shares some of what he and his fellow volunteers are focused on, and talks about whether tech is really right-wing. And he also talks about the surprising amount of hate mail he's been getting since the project was announced. Matt welcomes him to the club on that one.

Let’s start by eliminating Inter provincial trade barriers

Excellent to hear about Build Canada. Canadians need to be more change and entrepreneurial oriented. Remove our provincial barriers regarding interprovincial product sales.

To get Premiers to negotiate reducing interprovincial barriers, you have to threaten them where they live: money.

Tell them that, in order to reduce our deficit, we need to reduce transfer payments (Paul Martin did it in 1995). The target is a 50% cut IF they remove their barriers, If not, the cut is 100%.

For every idea that the entrepreuneur suggests, the bureaucrat generates ten reasons why it cannot be done.

Great great interview Matt. I can tell you what broke my trust in government. I have for years spoken out about high immigration...sometimes on-line and also to friends and family. Push back from all to the point that it discouraged me from talking about it. I loath Trudeau and the Liberals now. For years, the government had told people who think that having too many people in Canada might not be the best thing, that the illegal crossers at Roxham Rd and others could not be stopped because of the Safe 3rd country agreement between Canada and the US. Trudeau and whoever was the poor slob who was the immigration minister never said anything different...perhaps they might 'convene' a meeting on this! Shit. My thought was, then change the law. So then Covid came. Finally someone in government asked Biden if it would be OK with him if they ignored that part of the agreement and just closed the non-government border point down. Biden basically said he didn't give a shit and our government stopped the illegal crossers. That's it. Our government, the Liberals/NDP had actively lied for years and years and I just gave up. No consequences that I can see for those lies...to this day, the current Minister, seems pretty soft on the immigration file and unable to move. Yes, he's piddled around the edges but nothing is done to definitively fix it. Are Canadians lacking in mental and physical fortitude? Evidently those are the people currently in our governments...and I mean both Federal, Provincial and Municipal. Look at the homeless problem. I'm writing from BC and for Christ's sake, we have safe supply. I give up.

Our bureaucracy (fed, prov, muni) maintains closed rooms where they function. They define the problems generally without user consultation. They are incrementalists who want to avoid new (to them) unknown problems. Bureaucracies are risk averse, hence closed rooms.

New ideas require new regulations to ensure the solution is perfect rather than good.

We can no longer look for our governments to solve problems. Our solutions need to be self-starting.

Maybe next "Line" in person event - Build Canada -- could be a keynote. I would pay for that! Happily. So so smart!!!

So elating to see people trying to make things happen as opposed to just watching governments talk, tax, talk, talk and nothing ever gets done! This is exciting!!

Excellent interview and very informatve. Kudos to Daniel and others working with him for initiating all the great ideas on the Build Canada website. The Build Canada website is very inspiring! Daniel is right most of these ideas are not bold and must be seriously considered by whatever party is elected in next Federal election. Now is the time to act for Canada to change quickly and try to fix the carnage of the last 10 years.

A great project for Canada to focus on is the Northern Canadian Corridor Concept. Developed by the University of Calgary's School of Public Policy.

I think the biggest problem in the Canadian political system is that only a small fraction of the population is involved in the process aside from voting in general elections. What that means is that by the time the major political parties are presenting the platforms for election so few people have been involved in the process that the wider public doesn't see their priorities, and concerns reflected.

Have to make Quebec understand that their survival depends on building pipelines and other infrastructure to move oil to the coast and to eastern Canada to enrich the whole country and pay down the national debt. Everybody needs to work together to put Canada back on the road to recovery and the Conservatives must be elected.
