In this video, Dr. Berg talks about another reason why the person could actually feel more nauseous, bloated, and irritable when they consume certain vegetables.

It is because of something called lectins, a natural insecticide that the plant has to protect against insects and pests.

A certain percentage of the population is sensitive to lectins so when they consume lectins in certain foods, they would get more inflammation, bloating, nausea, etc.

Veggies High in Lectins:
• Kidney Bean
• Tomato
• Cucumber
• Peas
• Green Beans
• Chick Pea
• Soy
• Tofu
• Zucchini
• Nigh Shade (Pepper, Eggplant, Potato, Tomato)

Veggies Low in Lectins:
• Cruciferous – Arugula, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage
• Celery
• Carrot
• Onion
• Beet
• Asparagus
• Garlic
• Leafy Green
• Romaine
• Spinach
• Parsley
• Sea Weed
• Mushroom

Yeah but cruciferous veggies are notorious for giving gas... So you have very few options after that.

I am not on keto, don't know if I will ever try, however I just LOVE all the information you give and the simple way you deliver them. Your videos are useful even for people like myself that are not necessarily doing keto.

Most percentage of lectins die when we cook the vegetables or beans
Also for the people to whom cruciferous veggies cause bloating issue, don't rush your fiber intake at once, your microbiome might not be ready for it and the good bacteria are not ready to start digesting such big amount of fiber just yet. Slowly increase your intake of fiber so that your microbiome get enough time to adjust and evolve accordingly.
I know many people who can eat all the veggies in the world and still have no issue of bloating at all. It's all linked back to diversity in our microbiome.

OMG. No wonder I am always bloated. I basically eat regular salads (eg. Mexican mixed bean salad) with all the high lectin ingredients. Was so shocked to hear Dr. Berg lists them out because they were everything that went into my salad!

"Cant's" produce immediate negativity, "Can" produces favorable attitude so when I focus on what we CAN consume on Keto I see Abundance and zero deprivation with happy results of good healthy bodies and brains...Thank you Dr. Berg...Boise, Idaho

Unfortunately most of the vegetables in the low lectin list are incredibly high in FODMAPs, so not great for people who have FODMAP intolerance and are also sensitive to lectins. I find that FODMAPs cause worse gastrointestinal disturbances for me than lectins, as I have FODMAP intolerance. I suspect I have issues with nightshades (or lectins more broadly speaking), but FODMAPs are even worse for me.

I can't thank you enough for what you are doing. Please don't stop making videos! Be blessed love.

cruciferous vegetables have always been terribly bloating for me, this is because they are man made and not a naturally occurring plant. Beans, cucumbers and zucchinis on the other hand have always been fine.I agree with bell peppers not being so great though.

I watched this rediculous documentary on Netflix called "what the health". And it attacks mostly all you talk about Dr Berg. Saying 1 egg is like smoking 5 cigarettes. It's so hard to believe this day in age the information we are provided is always so 2 sided. I think you have it figured out by the way.

We soak legumes overnight and then cook in a pressure cooker.
All lentils are also cooked in the pressure cooker.

As vegetarians, we can't do keto so controlling lectins in our food is what we focus on.

Oh, new Dr. Berg's video!...
I always say, OK, I'll just skim over it this time – and then still watch it all from the beginning till the end.
There's just sth about the way he talks that gets me to finish the video, lol.
