In 2018, we sent out on a mission to find the best Christmas markets in Europe and after moving to Germany, we have continued our hunt. However, in all of these years, there has been one Christmas market that we have been dying to get to and this year we finally did! A few weeks ago we got to go to the Tallinn Christmas market in Estonia and it blew us away! One thing that surprised us was how much influence Germany had over the city of Tallinn and specifically this Estonian Christmas market. Watch and enjoy seeing what Christmas is like in Estonia 😊

First Christmas tree - there are some dispute whether it was erected first in Riga (Latvia) or Tallinn/Estonia? And where from this tradition is derived? The big tree is somewhat the holy thing among ancient estonians, dated back to BC era. A holy tree regarded as an old axe of the heaven in estonian-finnish ancient prechristian mythology. The tree as a heaven's axe is unknown in Latvian mytholgy. It's very-very old tradition to bring a tree into the house/rooms/ to celebrate the winter solstice when one year is turning to new one - and all the world (a time) turns around The Axe - The Holy Tree. And the only tree which looks like alive - eg green - is a spruce in middle of the winter...and this is where the Christmas tree is derived... Certainly it is an estonian folk tradition not german, but in 14-th century the germans were in power in Tallinn, so they used this estonian tradition to celebrate Christmas time

My favorite Christkindlmarkt is Augsburg. Snow definitely makes it feel more magical. I am so envious! Thank you for this video as it is helping me to feel a little more festive. Frohe Weinachten!

Small correction Estonia was for a long time ruled or dominated by German nobility living there, but not by Germany as a nation. Please recall modern Germany only started being a thing in 1871, when Estonia was already part of Tsarist Russia for a long time.

In German markets, mulled wine is probably reserved for red and white wine, the other hot drinks are usually called punch, from children's punch without alcohol to rum punch, cherry punch or all other types of berries

Hello. Nice market. First public Christmas tree in Europe was 1441 in Tallinn.

Glögg is simply described as it rhymes with plug. It's gluwhine in the far North, like Scandinavian countries. In Denmark, it's mulled red wine with raisins and almonds mixed it for flavor, as well as the classic spices. Your various flavors come from drinks more from Russian influence which is called compote, which is basically a boiled juice of various fruit. Be careful though, as there might still be pits in the cherries. I have never seen compote with alchohol in it, but, I wouldn't be surprised if you could find that too. Thanks for showing us Talinn.

I've lived in Tallinn for five years and the smaller market due to COVID actually feels more cozy to me. You're not missing much to be honest!

Born and raised in Tallinn, moved to Germany 11 years ago because of love, still nothing can take Tallinn's space in my heart ❤️ so I guess I'm biased about a lot of things Estonian, but especially Christmas markets. I used to go to school in the old town (12-13 years) so I consider myself extremely lucky to have been able to grow up in a fairytale.
I'm glad you enjoyed it there ❤️ your video made me all warm inside 🤭

The snow is just gorgeous! It really adds to the winter wonderland Christmassy feeling. I also don’t drink alcohol, don’t miss it either. Once you get your head around it, it’s fantastic. I‘d go there just for the snow and to drink mulled wine/glögi with no tipsy feeling. Duly noted!
