The pilot chose the fly through a low mountainous area with heavy fog/clouds, seems pretty obvious to me what the most likely cause would be. Also the aircraft was bit in the 80's so it is very easy to see a possible maintenance issue. Being Iran i can imagine they would blame the US for it

Fog limits visibility and sometimes patches of fog are thicker than the rest of the fog. Fog is no joke, I’ve driven though it before, it was hard to see. The fog absorbs so much of the light you just can’t see in front of you. A lot of people have died because of fog and zero visibility. It is sad when people perish like that because it’s messed up it’s still an issue.
