I didn't make it clear enough in this video, but people asking for pronouns to be added (many in a very polite way and from content creators who are known for stardew content) are being doxxed, harassed, and threatened. Concerned Ape is active in his community on twitter and forums, meaning he has more than likely seen this behavior and not condemned it. That is why people are upset, more so than the lack of a new pronoun option!

This is the toxic side of the LGBTQ community we Fr just need to ignore. I’m queer, I’ve been part of the LGBTQ community for a large portion of my life and I’ve loved every minute of playing Stardew Valley because it’s an inclusive game and the dude who made the game is really chill and just a good dude in general.

If there is honestly people who are harassing that man to change his game to suit their needs because he’s and inclusive indie game developer, then they need to screw off. ConcernedApe is a good dude, if you’re calling this man transphobic because he won’t add gender neutral to the game, then you need to check your privileges and really think that not everything is about you. You are bullying a man who is trying his best at making a game that everyone can enjoy, you as an individual are trying to hurt this man because he’s not answering your questions.

And to the people who are harassing and doxxing people who are asking nicely for new pronouns for the game. Grow up. Find something better to do with your life instead of trying to hurt people because their ideals don’t fit in with yours. If you are hurting people like that, I hope you get arrested :)

Hopefully ConcernedApe speaks up about his insolent fans who are being ignorant and trying to hurt others because of their ideals. Yes, it’s not his job to do that, but if he keeps letting people keep doing that without being told off, then they might think that he’s okay with that or something. It’s a difficult situation, hopefully it can get solved soon :/

I wish the best for everyone besides for the people who are trying to hurt others, it’s a game for Pete’s sake 🤦

If you are harassing someone about this you should definitely stop playing and reflect on yourself.

I’m stealth. ConcernedApe is a good person and developer. Stardew was one of the first games to be supportive of the lgbtq+ community and allowing same sex marriage within the game. Just because he doesn’t have a sex option doesn’t warrant a boycott… the internet is too serious about hills to die on that it becomes a childlike stance rather than affirming. Plus there are mods to allow more gender options. Not saying you should need to mod but atleast the option is still present even if not in base game.

It does suck for nonbinary people because it feels like neither character represents you so it’s not very inclusive, but I also imagine it might be hard to do all the dialogue changes? Idk.

Good lord, the dude’s a game dev, not an outspoken social justice activist! I bet my left toe that these people are a tiny minority of the fanbase but because they’re loud and offended people think it’s an urgent issue that they need to report to CA, like he’s their father 💀💀

Oh for fucks sake, you can pick up female shaped body and give it a beard, male shaped body and put a dress and bow on it, i don't think any pronoun even appears in the game... There is no moment when you choose your "pronoun". Only situation where players "gender" appears in this game is when you choose body shape in character creation... And i have no idea how 3rd body shape would have to look like in this situation, since differences between sprites are already minimal.
Yes, very transphobic developer indeed.

personally, I think it really comes down to entitlement. I don't mean this in the generic "These entitled kids [bla bla bla]." I have a few trans friends that have said something about it in past conversations. An almost direct quote from one of them was "Well, i payed for the game. I feel like me and similar people deserve recognition" which i feel is quite wrong. The game devs can do whatever they want in my eyes. Do or dont play the game, i really dont think concerned ape cares about the $15

If this is serious transphobia, there is a problem, it just a game

It drives me nuts that in a game that already blurs the line of gender that people want more. I would be willing to bet large sums of money that if concernedape came out tomorrow and said he wasn't going to add those things you would have the opposit effect where lgbt people would stop playing. He would become the next jk rowling.

Gander in the game does nothing besides for two things. If you parents asked if you want to adopt and what mail you get. That's it. I'm very neutral about my gender but stardew gives you the option to use whatever you want. Men and have girls stuff. Girls can have men's stuff. You can merry who you want and you can even change your gender in the game! People forget how hard it is to code games and he would have to make a whole new system for just that but there is already a system in place. That is that npc call you by name not gender and you can look any way you want. Gender means jack shit

I would honestly want so much more than adding a third gender. Make SDVE cannon, more npcs, more crops, more cooking, more events!

You can change your farmer with the shrine in the wizard's tower, or with mods. Though it honestly doesn't concern me.

The stardew character is inherently ambiguous so i don’t see their problem

Nonbinary person here. I do often get frustrated when games present a bunch of customization (clothes, gender, who you can marry) but leave out a gender neutral option. It can make me (and others) feel left out. That being said, I don't think game developers necessarily OWE us a third option. Just the same they don't owe it to us to let you pick your gender in the first place. IDK. I feel mixed on it.

Edit: that being said, it is totally valid to advocate for that kind of visibility in a game you love. Just don't go too far into harassment territory.

ConcernedApe has gone above and beyond as a solo developer to be inclusive to LGBT. This is just grasping at straws to find something to be upset about.

Note how they are upset that he hasn't addressed them? Additionally, this super tiny group - that doesn't even represent majority of LGBT thoughts to the game - most likely have never played Stardew Valley to begin with. Also they stated they might never play it again, which eliminates any pressure they might have had.

I'm the B, I'm married to a T, live with the G. There is a point where you have to properly pick your battles. Otherwise you end up damaging your image making a mountain out of a molehill.

Ngl as a someone who is non-binary I was just gonna pick the guy and make them as androgynous as possible bc the dialogue is a bit nicer between a few of the potential partners cough cough Alex

I think it would be dramatic to drop a game I enjoy so much over something he hasn't had the chance to speak on. Not only that, but on PC there are gender neutral mods available!

This is the first I'm even hearing about it. I also don't find it inherently bad of him to not say anything yet. I think people forget that both genders have some differences especially with LGBT related romances. Alex is a completely different path if you are a guy.

So what would programming a gender neutral option look like? Should he create completely original content or take some from both gender options? Also, how would the characters in the valley react? Is their relationship with any character considered gay, or just queer? And regardless of any of these questions, will that ever be good enough for the people who really want it? Gender neutrality is relatively subjective, and could stir up controversy if he adds it "incorrectly."

In the end I think inclusivity is always a plus. But I would rather use a mod than have people drag ConcernedApe for "not doing it right."
