Wouldn't it be great if you could sort FileMaker lists so the important items were at the top? I think so too! Which is why in this FileMaker tutorial I show you how to override the standard alphabetical sort with a custom sort by value list.

Lists sorted alphabetically are great for people's names. But when it comes to category, type and status fields it would be far better to have the sort order match the sort order of the values in a drop-down list or checkbox options. This way a list of jobs with status choices of Open, In Progress and Completed would sort in that order and NOT in the alphabetical order of Completed, In Progress and Open.

This easy custom sort order trick can auto-magically turn even a simple list into a powerful report. It's one of my favorite tips!
