In February of 1979, three friends and I piled into a car and drove from Colorado to Montana to get to the middle of the path of totality. We climbed to the top of a low mountain on someone's cattle ranch, where we had a perfect view of a valley to the west... we saw the shadow of the moon come right up that valley to us. We watched the diamond ring effect as the last light of the sun sparked from the moon's edge, and a brilliant peach colored glow burst out from behind the moon. The wind died down, the stars came out. The birds stopped singing. The cattle all lay down. There were concentric purple rings surrounding the moon and sun, and we spoke in whispers... connected to our stone age forebears by the sense of awe and wonder. It was a defining moment in my life. I will do whatever I can to experience that again in 2017. :)

This has been on my calendar for over a year. Not often you can just drive a few hundred miles to see an eclipse. Let's hope the most people possible have good weather for it.

Someone help me understand the difference between Time and Duration here because they aren't tracking together. For instance, it goes from a Time of 9:54:00 am PDT and Duration of 1m 18.3s to 10:23:00 am PDT with a Duration of 2m 8.2 seconds. Is that 29 minutes of time or 1 minute and 18.3 seconds?

I have read years back that the best one ever over the central U.S. will be August 12, 2045. I hope I (we) make it to that one too. I actually don't see, right off, how it could get any better than this one. I am not an astronomer though.

From where I live in Toronto, the sun will be about 70% covered. Is it worth it heading down to Nashville or St. Louis to catch the total eclipse or should i just stay? Thanks for answers!
