That part of the story is completely true John Glenn would only go if she said everything was OK. He had total confidence in her

I had so much respect for him referring to Katherine as “the smart one”, and not “the black one”. He was a better man than what was expected of him in the times.

If that dialogue was remotely accurate, John Glenn put his life in Katherine's hands. That's real trust in a team mate.

A "computer" used to mean a person who worked out computations by hand

He trusted her brain and did not give a rip about skin color.

This is so important! He asked specifically for the only woman in that department and called her the smart one! If she said the numbers were bad, he wasn't going up! That is complete faith in her skills and intelligence!!

He knew that she was smarter than the IBM computer. What he did was show how much respect he had for her. He put his life in her hands. Very Cool 😎

I’m glad he’s stuck up for her because he liked her from the beginning when she was telling them about what coordinates to take and what would help them land in certain places better he was agreeing with her from the beginning when they doubted her

As a 70ish white guy…I LOVE this movie! The first time I saw it I was so thrilled to hear John Glenn request “the smart one” instead of ‘the black one.’ It felt to me like society had actually progressed.

I'm 56 years old black man New Orleans. I was raised by eight strong black women, my grandmother, my mother and aunties. I looked up to them. Damn smart. Very mature, wisdom full of it. Every move I made was based on their decision. Now I am 56 years old due to them and the experiences that have been through it wasn't for them. I wouldn't be still alive today. Black women

Despite the title to this video, she wasn't getting fired at all. She was working in this department but the first IBM Main Frame computer had just been brought on line. So she was going back to the department she originally worked in.
The movie "Hidden Figures" was the story of three black women who worked as computers at NASA, which had been formed from several government organizations.
She and the other two women worked for NASA until they retired.
A really good story, women both black and white mathematicians, worked on the calculations that white male engineers were too lazy to do themselves, they considered doing the BORING calculations to prove the math was right, a job for secretaries which were traditionally female.
This woman being portrayed in the movie was a mathematical genius as a little girl.
In fact as others have noted there was some doubt about the accuracy of the splash down coordinates that the IBM Main Frame had spit out. John Glenn said if Katherine the smart one could verify the math he would go on with the mission.
