Can someone help me figure out what is wrong with my classic project car? The radiator keeps failing on my classic car.

Incorrect radiator cap. Building too much pressure for the core. Likely need a larger core with lower cap pressure to keep engine properly cooled. Radiator caps come in different pressure ranges.

If it's cracking in the same spot that means something on your car is twisting the rad.

Put some cardboard in between the hood and the fender panel, and check the cardboard after you drive the car for an hour. What will happen is the cardboard will crush and get marked by the body panels touching. Then you’ll know if your subframe is twisting when you accelerate. If so, add the necessary reinforcement.

Sounds like torsional forces since it's cracking in the same spot every time.

I had this problem with that exact same radiator. My issue was frame flex given it was a very different chassis. I changed over to a brass radiator and doubled up the rubber on the frame now it has been running for 4 years without an issue

I'd say it's flexing or over pressurizing. Make sure combustion gas isn't getting into the coolant system and make sure the cap is the correct bar

Could be frame flex causing stress on the welds

Get a more flexible rubber grommet for the radiator. Jags are known for body flexing and that could very well cause the radiator to crack if it is flexing in 2 different directions. Also the location it is cracking is the weak point of the radiator since it has welding done to it. If you get flexible gromment it could relieve the stress that is happening when the jag flexes under use.

Yup, classic case of radiator goblins. Once you got em, they never leave

I'd maybe run a radiator cooler or run a head gasket test. I've had head gasket blow radiators because the cap didn't loose pressure too fast.

Bad cap or it has a head issue pushing exhaust gas into the coolant. You need a radiator pressure tester put it on in place of the cap and see how much pressure it is building up then you will need the other part to test the cap, you put it on and pump it up and make sure the pressure guage readings match what the cap is supposed to be. You should be able to rent these tools at an auto parts store. I have my own been doing this since 1992

Jags do not have stiff chassis, go to a floating radiator, you can probably adapt the mounts that came on 69 and 70 Ford Mustangs/ Mercury Cougars as they have “floating” radiators. They’re not bolted to the frame and simply sit in a rubber bushing that allows the chassis around it to flex without putting any torsional stress on the radiator

The only vehicles I've seen break radiators like that were 2003-2006 Super Dutys used hard off road. They would flex enough to break the plastic on the stock radiators, and I even had one break a Mishimoto aluminum radiator. The fix is to loosen up the isolators a bit. They use a rubber bushing that fits around a peg on the tank ends, that is captured by a U shaped bracket. I would space the bracket out with washers to give it a lighter grip allowing more flex.

It could be bad radiator cap also a a bad thermostat get a lower temperature thermostat to open up or tested without the thermostat running straight see if it overheats like that

Like other people have said frame is twisting, create some chassis supports and a strut brace.

How about add a stiffer front sway bar and front suspension so it won’t flex so much in addition

Either too much pressure or the mount is not perfectly square causing it to be under stress.

Frame flex, I’d put rubber isolators on the mounts if they aren’t there already. Otherwise different radiator cap as suggested. Both are inexpensive so I’d just do both.

What's your thermostat temp? Is your pump flowing the correct way? Do you have proper flow rate? Any binding in any hose? Including little heater core hoses?

Reminds me of when my Ford Ranger blew up
