Marko has done his fair share of both abstract mathematics and practical AI engineering across 3 continents. This has given him some insight into the kinds of problems that we tend to create for ourselves, and how we might solve and outright avoid them. Through the lens of examining the less-than-ideal state of modern software, he will argue that "Don't Reinvent the Wheel" is generally bad advice, and explain the benefits of focusing on "problem-solving" over a "just-google-it" approach, which is particularly important for young students as they navigate an increasingly complex technological world.

Once people get a hammer they tend to treat everything as nails. Pointing out such cognitive bias and making people understand the problem, the context and alternative solution is an important first step.
