Rather than film the whole DIY Hydro assist install, I wanted to share the knowledge I gained throughout the process. So here it is, condensed down the best I could! Also a cost and labor comparison between the DIY route and buying a PSC or red neck ram kit. I hope this saves you some money and headache 🤘

The best DIY hydro assist steering video on YouTube hands down! Lots and lots of detailed information, every detail one would ever need. Watch this and you will not have any questions about setting your system up period. Good job man and sick ass truss, now if you could just get rid of that jeep and get something that's not a jeep lol

Very nice video Dan. I can 100% vouch for the "don't use 1/4" hoses" part of that. I am going to test what makes it better soon on my channel. I'm going to drill the orifice and keep the 1/4" lines first. Then I will upgrade to the 3/8" hoses and fittings to see the difference. Currently my steering is terribly slow.

there is also a pressure valve inside the pump. two styles really, you want the shorter one (no washer). these are factory parts. hit the wreckers and disassemble some pumps. one part to unscrew, and remove the part inside.

So I went ahead and got the PSC Ram, 1.75" 8" stroke a while back and am now reading of people having slow steering as opposed to the 1.5 inch ram. My thinking was power and rod size (.75" against .625") . Now I'm thinking I shoulda gone with the Surplus ram especially it having a 1" rod. Part of the reason I also got the PSC was I had a Quadratec gift certificate 😁. Since then prices have shot up, Now thinking I should sell it and easily recoup my money and get the surplus.

You can get bottom taps. They're not pointed on the end like taper taps.

Great video. I have a question about your set up tho, why are you running shackles in the front? Shackle reversal mod has been a popular and worthy upgrade to a yj even on stock axles. You want the shackles in the rear for wheeling it helps the spring/axle flex over the terrain smoother

I'm in the process of installing the same ram as you. I've read that some people are having slower steering in one direction since the 1" rod is taking up alot of space in the 1.5" bore on one side of the port. I hope I worded that in a understandable way... Lol

Have you noticed any difference in speed from turning left vs right? Thanks again, another great vid! 👍

I love surplus center for hydraulics. They have about anything you could want, and let's be honest, a ram is a ram. About the only thing you get from PSC that is of any real advantage is the higher flow power steering pump, and the benefit everything in one package. To me, that still doesn't make it worth what they want for those kits.

Why did you chose the swivel ends on the ram instead of fix like others?

Have you had the chance to wheel with the hydro assist yet? How does it react if so thanks!

why would you need spacer to limit the amount of stroke in the steering as it is pressure limited wont it just pressure releave and stop the ram
