You can throw it which is far faster. Do the same steps but instead of cycling the same actions you want to drop it walk ahead a little hit pick it up and swap to a weapon, the momentum will carry on and the shell will be thrown some distance. Depending on how good you do it, you can chuck it a good 10 feet infront of you
