It's incredible, but from all accounts this deception was so successful that Alexander the Great took inspiration from it and used a similar deception tactic to fool the Persians at the Battle of the Hydaspes River in May of 326, BC. Alexander was greatly outnumbered and the restrictive terrain made frontal assaults suicidal, but he used a screening force, marching them up and down the Macedonian controlled side of the river to make the Persians grow complacent and doubtful of their intentions to attack. What followed was a decisive victory of truly epic proportions. He didn't use a wooden horse, but the strategic value of deception wasn't lost on Alexander.

It’s likely the Wooden Horse was just a wheeled covered to be mostly missile proof siege ladder to enable soldiers to reach the ramparts then the legend just grew and grew.
