Why the Myers-Briggs Type Identification test SUCKS. (By a Psychology graduate)

The Myers-Briggs Test is a hugely popular personality test... that I have some serious problems with!

Have you done the test before? Did you find it at all accurate, or are you like me and treat it almost like a horoscope??

The widespread adoption of a model with very little empirical evidence (hard data) to support it is an interesting psychological phenomena in itself.

Y'all doing this from the 16 personalities website, it states itself that it's more big 5 focus than actual MBTI focus

To quote the website itself under the "Our Theory" section:

"With our NERIS model, we’ve combined the best of both worlds. We use the acronym format introduced by Myers-Briggs for its simplicity and convenience, with an extra letter to accommodate five rather than four scales. However, unlike Myers-Briggs or other theories based on the Jungian model, we have not incorporated Jungian concepts such as cognitive functions, or their prioritization. Jungian concepts are very difficult to measure and validate scientifically, so we’ve instead chosen to rework and rebalance the dimensions of personality called the Big Five personality traits, a model that dominates modern psychological and social research."

In it’s defense:
The original mbti goes much deeper than companies show; they water it down and turn it into a zodiac thing so that way it’s accurate for everyone, even if they mistype. The idea of the “cognitive functions, ” which companies don’t ever talk about, does have some merit to it though (or at least what I’ve seen in people.)
I’m aware that my personal experience isn’t exactly credible to anyone, but regardless; I’ve been able to use it to help use as a figurative stool to try to grasp a person’s traits. Who dislikes small talk and to what degree, how observational someone is, even what people are self conscious about. However, again, this is just a tool that only works like 80% of the time. It can’t be used to jump to conclusions, but it helps to know what to look for in a person when im psychoanalyzing them. The most unstable it gets should be “if person had traits A and B, they likely have C”

I don’t know if anyone understands this; whether I’m just explaining horribly or I’m just weird, but I know it works for me. It’s obviously not as reliable as actual psychology, but this works well enough. Standard psychology is too complicated for me to handle. Also expensive

Also, about different types acting different, that is entirely true. I have a friend who’s the same type as me (entp) and we act almost as opposites, but we still talk the same and think similar, if that makes sense. I act much more introverted, despite being an extrovert type, but we have the same perspective on questions and respond similar. We can never vent to each other because we have no advice for anything; since we’re in the same boat, if that makes sense.
I have two estp friends who have the same situation as well, so I know it’s not just me.

I’m expecting the replies to try to prove me wrong despite not having done much, if any research, but if there’s any questions I’ll probably reply

Interesting video - I first did the test about 6 years ago and got an INFJ and I did it again about a year ago and I got INFJ again - I think maybe for other 'personality types' it's not so good, but I personally do find it quite helpful. I'm even in a facebook group just for other INFJs and I find that I can really relate to what others post even though I don't know them at all and the only thing we really have in common is our Myers-Briggs type. 😂 Even though it's not entirely accurate I think there is some value in them, at least for certain people, but I agree that you can't really give one of only 16 personality types to the billions of people on this planet!

Great video girl! Ive never taken the Myer briggs but during my internship in the career center of a uni I learned quite a bit about those tests. Id be interested what other tests besides the 5 forces you think are actually somewhat "reliable" or at least useful in building tams. also the thing with your friends being all game for MB made me think of myself at the end of my a-levels choosing my study course. do you think there are (personality) tests that can help students with that?

Good vid - MBTI Mumbo Jumbo. However, you could have substantiated its weaknesses a little more strongly.
If we want to experience breakthroughs in life while in the pursuit of The Truth, things like MBTI provide tough anchors from which to break free.
I have found psychologists backing over their "knowledge" sooner or later, offering only relativistic concepts that aren't permanent.
So much mumbo jumbo.

Myers Briggs personality test is total hog wash!

Gotta be honest, you could've explained much better the logical reasons behind your distaste instead of just manifesting your distaste in and of itself, or at least that's what I expected from a Psychology graduate, some scientific analysis of sort

1-I totally agree with you, it shouldn't be used by work interviewers.

2-A personality test is not accurate. No shit, how did you find that out!? Nowdays, this test feels more to be an self-knowledge and interpersonal relationship thing than a feature to analyze workers.

3-I took the test, INFP type relates a lot to my life, life history and how i feel in this world although it's obviously not 100% accurate.

4-Did you research for those who say the exactly opposite from what you say? Learned something from them?

But damn, you claim so hard to be graduated that it makes it clearer that your opinion is weak.

It is pretty clear you don't even get the point of it and how it works at some points.

So you would also be offended if 16 bilion people were also divided into to only 16 genders, right? Because that's 16 categories. How could so many people fit into so few genders?
