A BACKFLIP in free skate!!!

Surya Bonaly of France made history when she landed a backflip in the free skate competition at Nagano 1998!

She started out as a gymnast which has a very different flow to movements. The judges just didn’t know how to score her. I absolutely believe there is racism in skating but this one time, I think she was so unique they couldn’t score her.

I saw this live and it was amazing and I love her for it!

She was the first one to acheive the 4 turn loop. This backflip was for two reasons: 1) Say FU to the jury, for years she was underatted for having a style not enough "classical" and too acrobatic.
2) It was a farewell gift to her public as Nagano 1998 was the last showdown on thé Ice.

On the ICE she was a complete godess.

I once met her, when I was still a kid, in the French Pyrineans mountains. I remember someone very modest and shy.
