1978 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ-40 "Beach Cruiser".Toyota BJ-40 Beach Cruiser for your consideration. This is one of the highest quality restorations on one of these vehicles that we have seen come through our doors. You will have a very difficult time finding another example that has received so much attention to detail, but has also been left original in nearly every way. This example is powered by a 2977cc Toyota B series indirect injection diesel motor. Power is routed to all four wheels through an upgraded four-speed manual gearbox and two speed selectable transfer case. Once the glow plugs are warmed up, the motor fires up and quickly settles into a smooth idle. The four speed transmission shifts effortlessly and is enjoyable in nearly every driving situation. Four wheel drive engages without a hiccup and delivers power to all four corners allowing this Cruiser to conquer any terrain.
Finished in Marine Blue, the body of this BJ-40 is immaculate. The paint treatment consisted of two coats of Marine Blue paint with three layers of clear to lock in and make the beautiful color pop. Underneath the gorgeous body is a full ARB suspension system. ARB is a respected name in Toyota communities and this example makes good use of their quality products. OEM sway bars and linkages were also replaced as part of the nut and bolt restoration. The entire chassis and body were fully media blasted and covered with two coats of epoxy primer and a finishing treatment. All nuts and bolts are either galvanized or stainless steel depending on the application.
In the front of the vehicle one will find a new OEM Toyota mechanical steering box and Toyota front disc brakes. In the rear are power drum brakes. The exhaust system consists of a 2.5-inch stainless steel rubber mounted pipe with catalytic converter and flex pipes in both the front and rear. Riding on 15-inch steel wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich K02 tires this BJ-40 has an appropriately commanding presence.
In addition to all of the cosmetic and mechanical restoration, the 12V electrical system received completely new wiring with modern connections, an Optima battery, and fresh 62 amp alternator. H4 Hella open beam lights are mounted in the front in addition to the OEM halogen lights. In the rear OEM appearing lights with turn signal, stop, and reverse lights are installed.
The interior is in fabulous condition with all period correct seats, dash, and gauges. Seating consists of a three person front bench seat with dual two person opposing side bench seats in the rear. Upholstery was done with complete high capacity vinyl with polysmart foam. New windshield was installed with modern impact protected glass.
The truck speaks for itself in the photos and in person, but driving this BJ is where you will truly fall in love. You can keep this truck the way it is and enjoy it at local car shows, events, parades and trips to the ice cream parlor and see your investment climb each year – or put the BJ to the test and take it on any off road adventure you can think of and see what these were built to do…go anywhere! Either way you will not be disappointed with this smart investment. These are the gold standard for any 4x4 vintage vehicles on the market and this market is only going up!
