The Real Meaning Of Leviathan In The Bible

The Bible is full of wild tales, and none are less fantastical than the occasional accounts of an Old Testament "Leviathan". This monster was apparently aquatic, which has led it to be compared to some present day amphibious reptiles. Others have suggested that the beast may have been a dinosaur, though this line of thought is easily debunked. Still others hold that the leviathan is nothing more than a dragon myth, but that may be putting the tale off too blithely. Let's take a closer look at the texts in the Bible, as well as ancient traditions, through the lens of modern scholarship. This is the meaning of the Leviathan in the Bible explained.

I know one thing for absolute certain. People can twist and spin things to mean anything they want. There may be an underlying truth, but its hidden beneath centuries of biased interpretation.

People believe in alien and if you ask them why they'll say we dont know everything. But if you ask the same people if leviathan or any other creature in the bible exist they will absolutely say no as if they know everything. 🤣

I have read the chapters of Job in the Bible and yeah I remember that it talks about two different creatures one is called the Behemoth and the other one is called the Leviathan and I got to the part in Psalms where the Leviathan is mentioned s second time and it said that the creature was chopped up in pieces

Leviathan also figures in the Hebrew Bible as a metaphor for a powerful enemy, notably Babylon (Isaiah 27:1). Some 19th-century scholars pragmatically interpreted it as referring to large aquatic creatures, such as the crocodile. The word later came to be used as a term for great whale, and for sea monsters in general.

I wonder if Leviathan is actually a reference to the ocean?

The word for serpent used in the Bible is “nahash” in Hebrew. It is the same word used elsewhere to describe leviathan which gives us a clue about the serpent that tempted Adam and Eve. Rather than a harmless tree snake as often interpreted in artwork, the Bible depicts Satan as a great monster who seeks to deceive and destroy. Definitely creates a different image when thinking of the fall. Fear would have played a big part in Adam and Eve’s minds as they are being led stray sort of like a senior bully applying peer pressure to some naive freshmen.

It’s still a mystery to me. I am reminded of what Jesus said though, that just as Moses lifted the serpent in the wilderness, the bronze one, that is, so must the Son of Man be lifted up. That always has me thinking about the crucifixion of Jesus, how he was taken up in the cross.

In the Bible, it said people were getting injured by fiery serpents, likely meaning poisonous, and the only way they could be healed was, through God’s power and ordination, to look upon a bronze serpent in a staff that he told Moses to put together. They would be healed rather than killed by looking at the bronze serpent.

Jesus died on the cross and his death and resurrection tells us that both sin and death can be defeated.

I would think the language here about leviathan has something to do with God providing for something that seems impossible. For Jesus also said, with God all things are possible.

Peace to the reader.

God will destroy all evil. All glory be to God. Leviathan stands no chance against our Lord, who is just and merciful.

The book of Enoch says it’s a female:

7. And on that day were two monsters parted, a female monster named Leviathan, to dwell in the abysses of the ocean over the fountains of the waters. 8. But the male is named Behemoth, who occupied with his breast a waste wilderness named †Dûidâin†, on the east of the garden where the elect and righteous dwell, where my grandfather was taken up, the seventh from Adam, the first man whom the Lord of Spirits created. 9. And I besought the other angel that he should show me the might of those monsters, how they were parted on one day and cast, the one into the abysses of the sea, and the other unto the dry land of the wilderness. 10. And he said to me: 'Thou son of man, herein thou dost seek to know what is hidden.'
