Did you know that Africa is the second largest continent in the world and it makes up for about one-fifth of the total land surface of the earth? Well, now you know!
Talking about things you should know, here are a few other facts you should definitely know about Africa.
Africa is a pretty big continent with a massive population of over 1 billion natives.
Africa contains an eighth of the world's people.
Africa is home to the world’s largest, tallest, largest and fastest animals and is also home to the largest wildlife immigration on earth.
Geographically, Africa is of great importance to the world as lots of the earth’s natural mysteries occur in the continent.
There are so many more, but we’ll stick with these!
So, you’re probably wondering how all of these facts are related to how Africa’s sudden disappearance would shock the world?
Okay… Let’s take a quick look at puzzles… you know how a puzzle can never be complete if one part of the puzzle is missing? That would be the exact case in the world should Africa go missing from the map!
Here’s why…
Experts believe that long ago, all the continents were joined together as one. They somehow managed to prove that about 300 million years ago, our dear planet Earth didn't have seven continents, but instead just one massive supercontinent called Pangaea, which was surrounded by a single ocean called Panthalassa. The division of Pangaea was caused by the process of plate tectonics, which is the movement of the massive slabs of rocks that the earth rests on.
Africa is one very important piece of Pangaea’s puzzle and should the continent disappear, then that puzzle can never be complete!
On another note, there is the case of population drop. The world will lose about 1.2 billion of its population if Africa were to vanish. The issue of population decrease could be looked at through different lenses. Poverty, underdevelopment and unrest, that are the major issues in the continent, would probably be wiped out should the continent disappear.
On the flip side, Africa currently contributes its own quota to the world in many different ways. Africa is home to some 30 percent of the world's mineral reserves, 8 percent of the world's natural gas, 12 percent of the world's oil reserves; the continent also has 40 percent of the world's gold and up to 90 percent of its chromium and platinum.
With these facts, it is quite evident that the world will lose out on some pretty important things that Africa adds to it in terms of mineral resources, agriculture, cultural heritage, workforce and manpower.
Moving on… Have you ever wondered why there are more large animals in Africa than any other continent in the world? Africa’s wildlife boasts of the “big five” which includes the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African Buffalo and many people just can’t seem to understand why they are native to Africa.
The simple explanation for this is the abundance of land that the continent has been blessed with.
Africa currently makes up for one-fifth of the world’s total land surface meaning there’s just more than enough space to let the wild creatures roam free. The safari is the most popular location for wildlife settlement. Should Africa suddenly get wiped out, the world can say goodbye to all the fascinating creatures it has come to know including the big five!
That’s all we have for today. What other ways do you think Africa’s disappearance will shake the world? Let us know in the comment section below!
