My Honest Review of the CSB Experiencing God Bible

The "Experience God" Bible study was the small group study God used to give me the final "push" Kari and I needed to move to full-time speaking and writing. So I was beyond excited when I heard that - after 25+ years - the folks at Holman Bibles had created the CSB Experiencing God Bible!

The Bible feels like a "whole Bible devotional" more than a traditional "study Bible." Enjoy my walkthrough.

Here are a few different versions of the CSB Experiencing God Bible:

We went through this bible study last year at our church and it was so good!
I need to review it though to refresh it in my mind.

I picked this up recently as my “read through the Bible in a year” Bible. I’ve been going through the Experiencing God study and this bible has helped me see more clearly the 7 realities in scripture so I can recognize them in my own life too. I like the character profiles, the font is clear to read, and I enjoy the large margins for notes. I got the hard bound copy since I’m using it like a textbook. I have really been enjoying it!

Hmm.. I really want to experience God, so I thought this Bible could help me with that, but this Bible seems to assume you already experience God. I haven't bought the Bible yet though. But when I see questions like at 7:09 I just have no idea what to answer. 1. 'What are some ways I am currently experiencing God's love?' Uhh I don't know. I'm just living my life, trying to obey God. I've never experienced God. And question two is even more vague to me: 2. 'What evidence of God's activity do I see in my life?' I don't know! How does one know if it is God who does something? And then I hear you talking about how this study method changed your life. And it makes me think: How is it possible that God blesses someone because he can understand His way of communication and doesn't give me that relationship that others talk about? I've always had problems answering the kind of questions this book asks. Like.. number 3: 'What is God revealing to me, and how is He inviting me to join Him in His work?' I don't even know what His work is? And I don't experience Him revealing anything to me. These kind of things have bothered me all my life and I would be very happy if I could talk about this with God when I'm dead. For me it has always remained a belief, no matter how hard I tried to get an experience with God, let alone a 'relationship with God'. But I do believe Jesus died for my sins and rose again on the third day. And I do try to obey Him. I'm 32, btw.

So it doesn't bother you that only 2 people put this Bible together? I just have a problem when it's not put together by at least 90 to 100 or more theologians and Bible scholars 🤔

What happened to scripture being sufficient and using a proper hermeneutical system to read and understand scripture?

It may be a very good new bible version but there are already many good bible versions, in my opinion there are actually to many bible versions at this point.

I would caution using Experiencing God. There are unbiblical errors in the book that would take too long to go over. Though we may see God’s past works through past circumstances, answered prayers, and other believers, the only way He speaks directly to Christians today is through the Bible. Many Christians are being told that God speaks directly to them today (“just like in Bible times”) through subjective impressions, signs, and other means. His is teaching about looking for a word from the Scriptures about a particular circumstance in one’s life.  Blackaby tells the story of a young couple who were struggling with a possible call to leave their home and minister in upstate New York.  She awoke one night at with an impression that she should read Luke 4. She interpreted it as she should go. Reading the Bible like this, to find a “word” from God directed to a particular personal circumstance, obscures the fact that the Bible has a definite meaning in itself.  The meaning of the Bible does not change from person to person and from circumstance to circumstance.  Whatever those words meant thousands of years ago when God first inspired them, they still mean today.  And it is dangerous to take a portion of the Scriptures and apply it directly to our lives without any regard for what that passage means in its context.
Christians are to always read the Bible in its context.  There is life-changing truth to be gained from understanding the Bible as God meant it to be understood. God’s normal way of operating in His people’s lives is to shape them by His Word, to transform their minds by His Holy Spirit, and to sanctify their reason so that they can consider and weigh alternatives and make wise decisions.
Blackaby also sees normalcy as a problem in the church. He speaks of “miraculous signs” that believers should be seeing and about Christians doing “God-sized assignments” so that everyone around will know they are from God. In fact, according to Blackaby it is the average Christian’s lack of the miraculous that causes people to reject Christ! This, according to Blackaby, is because God’s people lack the faith to attempt those things that only God can do. If you or your church are not responding to God and attempting things that only He can accomplish, then you are not exercising faith. This is unbiblical.
