He accepts the duties, he tries to be good at it until his son gets killed by someone from Team black, he fails horribly at everything, gets roasted, loses his beloved dragon by his own mistake, loses his body, etc.. etc..

Literally convinces an uninterested Aegon to assume the throne, then belittles and emasculates him at every possible opportunity only to finally give him up in return for safe passage. What a loving and caring motherly figure!

She forced Aegon to be king, she and Otto created this war, she craved for power
And now she is ready to let Aegon die for her sins, who is already broken bc of them

Daemon wanting to be king, Alicent joining Rhaenyra, Rhaena claiming Sheapstealer, Aemond deliberately trying to kill Aegon, Sunfyre being dead, Tullys declaring at the start of the war instead of near the end.

How hard is it to follow the books, some of these changes literally turn the plot upside down.

I agree with everything said. This self-righteous hypocritical selfish Alicent adaptation is just a awful character.
At least in the books she owned her actions. Here, she acts like everything bad was unintentional while she is one of the main ones pushing these to happen.
Plus she needs to take some accountability for her sons. Daeron being a good man does makes me believe she was part of the reason why the other two turned awful.
And to even allow for her sons to die is even worse than Cersei

And Alicent still has Daeron, who is a dragon rider and is beloved of the smallfolk. It doesn't make sense that she would want Rhaenyra, who she holds responsible for her grandson's death, on the throne over him. The writers are really having their D&D era.

Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower ''bends the knee'' pretty early in the tv version of the Targaryen Civil War. In the book, she surrenders only after the end of the Battle of the Honeywine, the Battle at the Gullet and the ''Fishfeed'' Battle. All these said battles haven't even happened yet in House of the Dragon. She also only capitulates at King's Landing after having no choice but to admit defeat. Even then, she was looking out for the best interests of her lineage. Alicent suggested that the Seven Kingdoms be divided between Rhaenyra and her son while keeping an arrogant air of disdain towards her stepdaughter. In HOT D, by having her go to Rhaenyra and plead for mercy while offering her son's head on a silver platter, the show makes her irredeemable with her lack of courage and family/nation pride.

the attempt to make her a more sympathetic character (being on Rhaenyra’s side, because she’s regarded as the “good” one and most fans of the show prefer her) actually turned Alicent to the least sympathetic character in the show right now
