Sorry WarthogD21, I must disagree with not being able to rock climb or anything with a D4. We do it on a regular basis here in Australia. I myself also drive a D2, but I have had the pleasure of a D4 with me around a lot of the eastern side of Oz. Not once has the independant suspension stopped it. In fact, it has helped it an many occasion when in deep ruts, where I have struggle with my solid axles.

Great review. Many thanks. One question though...why has the car in the review got the stick shifter. I thought all the post 2010s had a rotary shift and the review is from June 2011. Not a complaint, just wondered.

The rotary gear selector came in for the 2013 car although interesting the new Sport has gone back to the stick-shift...

Beautiful car, well built and unlike Land Rovers of old perfectly reliable...not a peep out of our HSE since new. Goes anywhere, pulls anything and with a real luxury feel. Just bought the wife a Freelander which is equally brilliant.

Land Cruisers are great cars, reliable, good off road etc. Certainly a worthy contender to the D4 off road I'll grant you. However, I'm afraid the Disco 4 and the LC are worlds apart when it comes road manners, refinement and looks. No contest at that point.

Maybe if you live in the Aussie outback then the LC is a serious possibility, but if you need a totally unstoppable, go-anywhere, do anything, refined and utterly comfortable cruiser, at a doable price....there is only the Disco 4.

This vehicle in 4x4 areas beats NEARLY ALL others except the Hummer H-1, Range Rover (higher cost vehicles) If the MSRP is $55, 000.00 you pay out the door 41, 900.00. Enjoy!

For the desert neither the disco nor any car on the market is suitable. They have to much electronics: defend., mb g and LC. I would trust a LC hzj which is not easy to buy in the EU or wrangler4.0.But the disco is the best offr-car with the best onroad-driv.abilities. The g, wrangler and def.are no fun to drive due to their axles and the LC aswell as pajero only has a 4cyldiesel and 5gear atm. The RTI of the LR is due to the air sus. better then LC and beats also the g which is really stiff.

you can mount a snorkel on this car, and cross a lake.. ..drive it through the most muddy fields of the world, with quite some speed, drag pretty much what-ever you can fit on the hook - its almost better than the Defender - and race it with high speed on some of the worst roads in the world. The Discovery 4 is GREAT.
