Jason, people are going to always talk crap. Do what makes you happy. We are never too old to learn. I have watched your videos since your camping days. I love your adventures. Happy Adventures!

Another thing off your bucket list checked. I say go for it and Live the Adventure. Sounds fun and just think of some interesting places you could go. Mexico or Tobermory. When I was a kid I went to sailing camp for a month and enjoyed it. Have fun and anyone who says don’t do fun things isn’t living life. Have a great day and enjoy being on the water.

You are not crazy, your dreams don't match the dreams other people have. If we all thought the same way, life would be SO boring! It doesn't matter what your age is, if you want to do something, do it! If you fail and it is important to you, you will learn to do it better. If not, then you move on to the next thing. Good luck, I hope that sailing is everything that you think it is and more!

I can't believe people would advise against learning to sail or curl, or fly. I am a recreationist by trade and know that learning new things is an essential part of being a human being. It's really not that hard, just common sense and paying attention to the weather and your surroundings. I think you will have a blast. PS, I am 65 and love to learn new skills/skills. Come visit us when you're in Ontario, Canada and we will take you out on our Aloha. We love that we keep it in the Thousand Islands.

I would be limiting contact with those negative nellies.

Learning how sail around La Paz sounds good you’ve got the knots going and your canoe thing going. You’ve got the nautical thing happening already to become a crewmember to Hawaii. I did it from being able to cook on a medium sized large sailing vessel and being in charge of purchasing all provisions Red Sea and Mediterranean and then learning how to sail but always learning how to do everything. People who are going across the Pacific need “You” on their crew Jason. Believe me.

After taking your first sailing lessons, I can see the title of your next video..."Jason buys his first sailboat"
A number of years ago I took my first sailing lesson and have never looked back. I love sailing.
Enjoy!!!

Pretty cool. My first glance at the title made me think, why is Jason In northern Manitoba? Sailing eh? Well, at least you know all the knots. 🙂👍

51!? Spring chicken. I started sailing a couple of years ago at 57 in my daughter's Europe dinghy that was gathering dust in the garage while she was at university in London. Never had any interest before, but it was a nice day and I figured it could be fun to try, so I dragged her pink and white boat through my small town down to the lake. Lots of strange looks from neighbours wondering, "What the hell is he doing now?".

Managed to rig it with the help of the instruction book, and launched. It's a bit like balancing on a beach ball. I spent a lot of time upside down, but it was more fun than I could imagine it would be, despite the rather large audience on the shoreline wetting themselves laughing (it was also the height of tourist season). So read a book that night, and set off again the next day. Only rolled a couple of times. Once when when I let go of the tiller during a confused tack, and once when I made a mess of a gybe. And I was severely bitten by the bug. And my skills advanced quickly. Trimming the rig, adjusting where I put my weight, etc to squeeze out extra speed. Working out optimal routes, and racing anything I came across in the water. Maneouevring around buoys and docks, including the useful skill of stopping without impact. Very fulfilling.

And then I went big. 50 feet big. Which is really easy compared to the dinghy. Just more expensive when you hit stuff.

Since when is 51 too old or old at all for that matter? Perhaps they are a bit jealous? Looking forward to following this new adventure. Have a blast Jason.
