This is really good advice. There's a lazy part of me that doesn't want to invest time in this since I want to create "my own" sound, but I think once I do take the time to reverse engineer great production, the ability to take that knowledge and work it into my stuff is going to make "my own" sound way better

That is the BEST way to learn production. It trains you to listen to music not hear. You’re able to then understand what sounds and techniques are used in a genre. Good stuff!

I did this not too long ago when I felt I had hit a roadblock and kinda was lost. Remade one of my favorite tracks and I learned a lot and not only that, it really boosted my confidence as a producer. Made me feel like I can really do this shit. Probably should do it more often.

This is how you learn to play piano as well. You learn existing work and progress through harder progressions. Eventually you have a ton of melodies you can pull from and create your own patterns.

Could not agree more. When I started producing, there was no youtube. I used to take MIDI files and use vanbasco midi player and deconstruct and recreate it in reason 4 and cubase. Really helped me understand how songs are made. Producers don't understand how easy they have it!

Great video! I think the biggest challenge of reverse engineering a song is knowing how to use your synths to tailor a specific sound you’re looking for

You should be advised that this can also take you down a dark path that is full of frustration. After seeing this, I have been trying to do a remake of "futuristic polar bears - you & me".
Started out great with lots of energy and had a fun time - I got the chords and the melody right.
No problem.
But, having spent now over 10 hours, trying to recreate the sound from the intro chords, using many hours in Serum, and browsing through a tonz of presets in Nexus, Omnisphere and Massive, A.N.A. and a lot of other synths, leaves me so frustrated, that I have lost all energy to try and continue.
Making that sound is the hardest, I have ever tried, and faling does not make you a happy person.
It makes you feel like an amateur!
So my advise - stop using time on sound design, if you cant get the sound right -> do not spend more then max 30 min. on trying to recreat a sound, or you will enter a dark path of fustration.
That sound sounds like a mix of a marimba, a sine wave, an organ or guitar.
The sound is impossible to do 100% - at least that is what I feel right now.
BTW: A virtual beer for the guy who can recreate that sound and tell me how.

Yes, this is an awesome technique to improve your music production. You're crazy fast at designing sounds using Serum!
Any recommendations for becoming better at Serum?

Its a great tip, and how loads of industries approach new projects. Reverse engineer existing methods, models, and projects to gain a deeper understanding and then apply your own requirements or alterations what ever they may be. I come from a web design and coding background and thats a very common practice my industry.

I occasionally remake songs. But I always create a unique composition. So I am just burrowing the sound design and the arrangement from the track while still making an original track.

Another tip I think is quite good, is trying to find songs with remix stems so it seperates out the elements. This helps if you haven't developed a very good musical ear yet, as it will still teach you about how everything comes together and it will make everything a lot easier to remake, as you can hear everything easily.
