How to read a cable chart

Cable charts can look like a jumble of nonsense if you don’t know how to read them. In this tutorial, I explain how to interpret the symbols so that you can easily follow a cable chart and knit all the cabled sweaters you dream of. The sweater I use to demonstrate this technique is called Silver Birch and will be release later in 2022. Sign up for my newsletter (link below) if you want to be informed of the release!

Fabulous tutorial! I have some familiarity with cable knitting but not with cable charts. I'm ready to get back to knitting now. 🎉🎉

I just wanted to let you know that I have bought Wildhorse and Blizzard patterns yesterday! They are the most attractive designs I’ve seen so I really wanted to try. I am a just 3 months novice so wish me luck!

Interesting that you put the stitches from the dpn's back onto the left needle then work them off. I knit them off the cable needle. Think I'll give you method a try. Seem to be a smoother process.

Thank you. Question- I’m working on a cabled hat that I put down a year ago because I lost my place- UGH. Tried finding my place on the different cables by ripping back but don’t want to rip entire 18 row x2 and start over. Ideas please?

I understand now how to read the cable in the chart, but what about all the squares above and below the cable cross picture?
