Europe's Very Large Telescope captured this time-lapsed imagery of the crescent Moon illuminated by the phenomenon called earthshine. Sunlight bouncing off the Earth in the direction of the moon creates this surreal view.

@Archer7Tadayoshi [It's called the "farside"] 24 astronauts have seen the lunar farside with their own eyes. But none have landed there. NASA wanted to be in constant contact with astronauts while on the surface. Without data relay satellites in lunar orbit, there was not (and still is not) any way to do that.

There's actually not much difference in the "albedo" of the Earth from hemisphere to hemisphere. Cloud cover does not vary much between land and ocean. The predominate color that's reflected off the Moon is actually blue.

What does the moon look like from Tonga, Kiribati or Cook Islands of Oceania ?Does the ashen glow look darker from an island in mid pacific since less Earthshine travels to moon than from Europe or USA ? If the Earth was all covered with oceans would the dark area of new moon be too dark to make out features ?

Surreal view? Aside from the first few seconds, this is all CGI! Why are you claiming this to be authentic when it is obviously NOT!?
