If you are wanting to scald a pig or a large hog there are a few different methods to accomplish this. Old fuel oil tanks work great for a task such as this if you don't mind doing some prep work to get it ready for scalding. Today I show you what we are doing to turn this old tank into a scalding tank.

That old oil barrel will make you a great scalding vat Matthew. Grandma had one just like it that had some pin holes in it and I converted it into a water barrel to haul water in back when I was raising tobacco. I'll never forget one evening I came in from school. Daddy was planting tobacco and had it on the back of my 1966 Chevrolet pickup full of water. Most of the ones I've seen around here had the trench under them for a fire like you're talking about. I like your idea about reusing the section you cut out. I think that's one reason why I like y'all so much. Like me, y'all repurpose everything. Have a great day! 😊

Good stuff! We used to have a scalder made out of a HEAVY barrel that was old enough it was riveted at the seam. I like yours better. I happen to have one of those tanks laying around so I might need to copy your design. Now, as for getting the hog in/out, I'm lazy so I'd probably use the excavator or tractor then let it hang for the scraping...

That is certainly going to work a lot better than the 55 gallon barrel Grandaddy used for scalding. There were always parts of the hog that didn't get scalded well and those were a pain. The first thing I thought when you pulled the top off that drum was "oh, that could be used for something!" I see some good eating coming your way. Y'all stay safe.

Turn the part you cut off into a lid. So when you make fire it can heat the water faster.

I'm getting an out of service propane tank this week. Haven't decided the size just yet. They want $1.00 per gal of tank. It may be possible to get two tanks out of one, but I think to get the depth without having to roll one tank for one hog. I"m going to weld legs and then a skirt to help with heating efficiency. It will get a 1.5" ball valve for dumping. Do you have any thoughts?
