Ukraine aid in limbo despite Biden signing short-term spending bill
US President Joe Biden has today signed a short-term spending bill that keeps the federal government operating until early March.

However, while the bill averts what would've been a partial government shutdown starting tomorrow, it does not address additional aid for Ukraine.

Efforts to divert more funding Kyiv now remains in limbo as key legislators continue to negotiate a border security measure that would go in tandem with more support for Ukraine.

Putin 'could attack NATO within a decade'

Russia could attack NATO countries in under a decade, German defence minister Boris Pistorius has warned.

"Our experts expect a period of five to eight years in which this could be possible," he told German outlet Der Tagesspiegel.

"We hear threats from the Kremlin almost every day, so we have to take into account that Vladimir Putin might even attack a NATO country one day."

But it is unlikely "for now", he added.

However, he said "one thing is certain - we are dealing with a military threat situation in Europe that has not existed for 30 years".

Mr Pistorius said: "We see it through Russia's attack on Ukraine. We hear threats from the Kremlin almost every day - most recently against our friends in the

Asked whether the German government could do more to help Ukraine, Mr Pistorius said his country was the "second largest supporter of military aid after the USA, and therefore the largest in Europe".

He added: "If Putin wins this war and occupies Ukraine, the danger for the alliance's territory will of course also increase."

Earlier (06.53), we reported that a NATO official is warning civilians in the West to prepare for conflict with Russia.

Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer said: "We have to realise it's not a given that we are in peace."

Next week, NATO will launch its largest military exercises in decades .

2024 'likely to be very difficult' for Ukraine

The Ukraine War has turned into a "strategic stalemate" and 2024 is "likely to be a very difficult year for the Ukrainians", Sky News military analyst Simon Diggins has said.

It is clear that the Ukrainian counteroffensive has "not succeeded", he added.

However, it is "unclear" whether Russia intends to launch another offensive of its own.

Diggins also responded to comments from a senior NATO official, Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer, who said civilians in the West should prepare for conflict with Russia.

"Putin has not given up," Diggins said.

"Putin has a view of the world, which is basically that of the old Soviet Union, and that of the old Warsaw Pact.

"Remember that he served as an officer of the KGB in the old East Germany.

"He views that as the natural place of Russia - having a bulwark of states in front of him."

Diggins added: "I think the NATO official is right to warn us of Russia and Putin's ambitions - they have not gone away.

"The attitude we've had up to now, where a lot of European countries have barely put any money into defence, has got to change.

"I think that will be the view of an awful lot of military officials."
