This ticks me off because I actually have two female friends who have beards for reasons beyond their control (one has a congenital birth defect affecting her hormone production and the other had ovarian cancer) which also caused them other heartbreaking irreversible damage like infertility, NOT something they did to themselves.

When I was in middle school, the big thing was mental illness. Everyone was pretending to have ADHD, schizophrenia, insomnia, etc. It made them "special" and they got all sorts of attention from the other kids and adults. Then it was cutting with the emo phase.
