In today's video I share some tips to increase your speed when english style knitting. A few years ago I wanted to learn how to start flicking rather than throwing while knitting and that helped me knit faster! I hope these ideas help you to make your knitting more ergonomic and increase your speed at the same time.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try my best to answer!!

Thank you for explaining this so well! I always tried to learn off my grandma, and she went so fast that she struggled to teach me because slowing down confused her! I’m trying to learn so I can finish off her projects that she left for me when she passed away, and I got really upset earlier when I realised how far away from being able to do them I am - your explanation on how to flick really helped me speed up and it’s really helped cheer me up and give me some hope that I won’t let her down!!

Great tips in the video.
Maybe somebody else mentioned this but...

I like to make a single turn of the yarn around my pinky which helps to regulate the tension on the line as it crosses over my index finger. This improves my ability to hold it on the second or first knuckle. If I am using two colors I'll put the second one around my ring finger and then I never have to let go of anything in order change

I am a continental knitter but I am going to try your English style after watching your amazing video . Your directions were clear and concise.💙❤️💕

Thank you! English style is the only way that feels natural to me but I get so discouraged by the wrist pain that comes with it. Definitely going to try flicking.

This is a vey good video. I have been knitting for about 60 years. My mother taught me English. I have often wanted to change my method. I don't really drop the right needle, I hold it with my left hand and throw the yarn with my right index finger by would love to flick. The problem is my arthritis is so bad in my hands, especially my right hand that it makes it hard. I started a wrap that is 1x1 rib with a mohair blend. It may be 10 years in the making. :). I don't know why I am bothered by my speed, like you said it isn't a competition and there are no knitting police, and I am blessed that my gauge is spot on, but I am. I am going to try your method and see if maybe it will work. The explanation of holding the yarn at the end of your finger was a great pointer for me. TFS

I searched & searched then gave up & learnt continental style. However your video gives so many good tips, I'll practice this because I learnt English knitting style first & I find it suitable for me, just too sore for a long project.

I am a left handed English knitter. I like the smoothness of your technique but right now first try, it is very awkward for me. I will practice because I do get hand pain and I would like more speed. My tip to any lefties, is try Portuguese knitting. I wear a little pin high on my right chest and my yarn goes through it. It allows for flicking and all stitches come to the front. Very Pink Knits channel has a great tutorial.

I am a flicker, too. I find another benefit to holding the yarn closer to the top of your finger is that the of the needle doesn't graze your fingertip as much.

Been throwing since I first learnt .will never change and I can knit fast with the best of them. You still finish the project at the end of the day.

When I knit continental style with two colors I flick with both left and right hand. it saves time, it's fun because you need to engage "both sides of the brain" at the same time :)

I hold my yarn the same as I would for English knitting. I sometimes knit like you’ve shown but was told that this wasn’t “flicking.” Flicking involves rotating the the needles to grab the yarn - almost changing the angle of them based on leveraging them from bottom. You hold your hands a bit away from the tips rotate your hands together, which brings the points together like a lever, then your fingers don’t do any work only the needles.

I find it interesting that people think letting go of the needle to wrap the yarn is “traditional”. I have been knitting for 64 years and it has only been in the last 30 years or so that I have seen people doing this. Maybe it was a regional trend that got passed on when knitting became popular again in the 80’s. I do remember at some point seeing some TV knitting instructors doing it but normally they were using bulky yard and very large needles. I have always knitted with the lever, flicking, or german method (continental) and now I have added the Portuguese method. The more ways you know how to knit the better, so you can avoid repetitive stress.

Your technique reminds me of how i do continental purling.
