In today's video, I share a few hidden and unexpected costs I have realized when upgrading to a larger tire size on my off-road vehicles! There are all the typical things that people think about and expect--getting them to fit can be challenging, the worsened fuel economy, etc, but it's easy to forget the other effects that an oversized tire can create on your truck or SUV.

Like someone mentioned I’m an old guy been playing with cars for years and it’s amazing to me how someone as young as you so much wisdom. those are all things that you have to think about when you’re modifying your vehicle. It’s really cool to see that you’re putting out there for everybody else

This video is very well timed. I was on the fence about switching my perfectly fine 265’s to 285’s “just because.” For now, you’ve talked sense into me 😂.

Recently upgraded to 33s from the 265 stock on my 3rd gen. smiles per gallon, not miles per gallon!

Great video! The spare tire is so often overlooked. Most of the time the solution involves a lot of money and a lot hassle for the rest of its life

Chloe... You're quite smart. Thank you for all the advice for upgrading to larger tires. Money, money, money!!! Keep them coming. Great videos. Is your landcruiser for sale?

Totally agree, I got a bbk upgrade right off the back, then went onto everything else that follows to allow bigger tire set up, I’m definitely more than 10k because of the gear and lockers package i got😅

I stopped doing just that many years ago just because the gains were not really there!! So have only replaced tires to an all terrain of my preference like Goodyear Wranglers AT etc. on stock Toyota factory wheels!!

Great video and certainly a decent dive into what goes with installing bigger tires.

I really want to know what issues you had with the 4 gen Taco. I want 33” inch tires on mine.

Just bought a 24 TRD Sport, installed Toyo 285 70R 17 with method wheels, fit perfectly, looks awesome, no mods whatsoever to fit the tires. I did remove the air dam pretty much when I drove it off the lot. I have not noticed any measurable difference in fuel usage, braking distance or lag from a dead stop. Maybe in time I’ll see brake pads wearing quicker? The ONLY negative I discovered so far, is the stock TRD wheels and tires that came off my truck will ONLY fit 24 tacomas and beyond, which means my resale market is very small. Also, I used Amazon and other online dealers to get the best price on wheels and tires right from discount tire who ordered tires and wheels on Saturday and installed on Tuesday, I love the look !

Hi Chloe, could you please make a comment on truck undercoating to prevent rusty

Over the years I started sizing down in tires. Mo’ tires equal a lot mo’ problems for sure. Fuel guzzling, alignment, noise, and the list goes on.

Me too. Im a old guy. i lift everything i own. Rear locker 33s 34s 35s tires and cut out flairs. Lifting depends how high i can lift without having drive line vibration or having to lower the T case to fix drive line issues or shim axels. Bigger tires = gear change or deal with power loss and fuel economy wak speedo. Bigger tires=Wears out breaks faster and break fade unless you upgrade the breaks. Wheel bearings fail quicker. Not to mention the added tork the larger tires put on axel shafts and stock gears. After 97 all vehicles have reprogrammable computers and that helps with the speedo and mileage to correct for larger tires. But still could have to spend a crap load to correct issues a reprogram won't fix. Do your research before lifting and doing bigger tires. Do it right the first time to save headaches and extra money. Me i live for people's half finished projects because they didn't do Thier research and ran out of money. Don't mind doing knuckles and U joints every year or so. Its a bye product from lifting it and im offroad every day.

Great points, I had never considered the impact of increased tire size on the odometer.

Have also heard some complaints that bigger tire can cause more stress on wheel bearings and ball joints etc… perhaps debatable like anything but one quickly learns that to some degree, everything in your suspension and power train are related. Changes have a cascading effect.

This is great information.

I think oversized wheel/tires and lifts are not a great idea for trucks that spend most of their time on the road, for the reasons that Chloe mentioned, as well as worse handling on the road, more rollover risk and worse gas mileage.

Toyotas are so well engineered that I’ll take original over aftermarket suspension parts any day. I often see used trucks for sale with cheap aftermarket suspension and lift kits usually installed by amateurs, and avoid them like the plague. These types of user modifications don’t tend to add resale value, may lower it if original parts are missing or the vehicle has Bubba damage.

Of course for hardcore mostly off-road rigs these mods make sense.

About $2000 per axle to regear. I do not go over 2 inches larger than stock without regearing.
