Sae-Byeok’s personality is a mixture of Gihun’s and Sang Woo’s. She was tough, stoic, and determined to win no matter what just like Sang Woo. But she also had a good heart, was caring and could never kill anyone like Gihun. That’s why they were the three finalists they all resembled each other in some way.

She eats potatoes like that reluctantly, because she is sad about the tragic death of her short time friend in the marbles game. Yet she is rational enough to know she has to eat to survive. So her rationality wins unlike Gyeon who does not touch his potato as he is so sad because the old man has just been shot. also her throat is blocked somehow because she is crying inside :)

On the front wall of the office of the broker "남남북녀" "South Men, North Women" is written, that means his official business is marrying south korean (generally old) men with north korean young female defectors, that represents the hardship that female defectors face in my country. In South Korea, marrying this way is being seen somewhat dengrating, because here people generally think only desperate people do that. To marry to get out of poverty. And judging by the broker's dialect, he himself is a north korean defector.

I love how Gi Hun started this series resenting and hating her for what happened with the money he won at the gambling place…

To coming to genuinely love her as a person and being absolutely devastated at not being able to save her.

I think you got a detail wrong, Sae-byeok and her family escaped through the Tumen river in the North into China and traveled to Mongolia where they are deported to South Korea (Mongolia has the policy of deporting all Koreans to South Korea), this is the most common route used by NK defectors. The DMZ is way too dangerous to escape through and has only been done like 1 time recently when a guard drove his vehicle straight through the border (they guy was shot a couple times but survived)
