Should we consider buying a used Fujifilm X Pro3 when the X-Pro4 arrives?

Fujifilm has recently released the X100VI with IBIS and a 40MP sensor. This suggests that the X-Pro4 with the same innards can't be too far behind.

Once the X-Pro4 arrives, we can expect a lot of X-Pro3s to hit the used market, especially if the 4 deals with the rear screen issues.

The X-Pro3 has been disliked because of its rear screen design and the tendency of the screen ribbon cable breaking. There's a good chance that the prices will be quite reasonable thanks to these issues.

Is there a way around these screen issues that will make the X-Pro3 a more attractive used option?

Yuji Igarashi, a Fujifilm Divisional Manager in a recent interview with DPReview, made of point of saying that the X-Pro line will continue along with the X100 line. No timeline for an X-Pro4 was mentioned, but now we have a senior manager saying clearly that there will be one.

Thanks for this Peter. Let’s hope we get an X-Pro4 but in the meantime, forget about the X-Pro3 and go for the X-Pro2 instead. A better more adaptable viewfinder and no worries about the ribbon connector as it doesn’t have one. Genius!

I love the no chimping fold down lcd. Hope they keep that but also fix the ribbon issue.

I’m guessing the xpro4 would be made in china now too, and they probably won’t go all out with these dura titanium versions 😢

Dura silver is my favorite finish ever!

I love the XPro line. Too bad I was not well informed when these were available and I missed the boat on buying a new one. If Fuji made an X-Pro with a good EVF and no OVF and everything else much the same as an X-Pro2 I would want one.

While I do worry a bit about the ribbon cable on my XPro3, I've pretty much used the EVF to make camera adjustments anyway. I also don't extend the LDC screen all the way down if I find I need to use it. That said Fujfilm should have made a more reliable LCD ribbon system, and should extend the warranty on the part of the camera. It will be interesting to see if Fujifilm abandons the always hidden flip screen on the next version of the XPro.

I’m a perfect match for this silly camera. I’m high mileage but I seldom use the lcd but do a 1.5 second chimp on the EVF. My fn button is recipes. 7 SOOC options at my fingertips and each one displays on the hated back panel lol. Great points Peter!

I was already using the X-Pro2 in that manner, since I just bought it to get acquainted with the system and see if I would enjoy the X-Pro3, so I was consciously trying to use the rear screen as little as possible. However, in the meantime the X-Pro3 became very difficult to find in my country, so I sold the X-Pro2 and bought the X100V, which had (compared to my regular gear) enough different features to deserve a permanent position in my collection. I ended up selling the X100V too though, because I found the focus performance in low lit situations just awful — but that might have changed in the X100VI, so I might end up buying that one... I hope the X-Pro4 has that hidden LCD screen though, because I don't have enough money for a Leica M-D!

"...rear screen that nobody likes..."??? IMO, the rear screen design is one of the best changes that occurred and one of the most compelling reasons to buy the XPro3.

People who b*tch and moan about the screen arrangement simply don't get the ethos that Fujifim was trying to promote with the body and frankly, they should be using one of the XT or XH bodies instead because it isn't primarily designed for it. It's like some dummy complaining that the camera isn't good for vlogging because the screen can't flip 360 degrees for front facing recording, or some other dummy complaining that it isn't a good video body to mount in a video rig because it doesn't have HDMI output. Those are absurd complaints.

I have been holding on buying an XPro3 because I was expecting a new version a year ago or so with (hopefully) the newer batttery so I can use only one type for it and my GFX camera. However, now that the new body is out with the older battery, I'm guessing they will hold onto that size in the XPro4 but they will also buckle to all the complainers out there and not repeat the (IMO) excellent rear screen design approach that was in the XPro3. That makes me think I should get one and not wait.

I'm not convinced that an X-Pro4 will come out. The one that sells like hot cakes is the X100 series and pre-orders for the new V1 model are record breaking from what I understand. In a world where manufacturers are pressured by industry decline, recession, supply chain issues, chip shortages etc. where do you put your resources? Probably into the one that sells and rationalise the lesser performing variants. I may be wrong, but if you want an interchangeable lens version of the X100, might be an idea to grab an X-Pro3 while clean low miles ones are still available in the used market. I agree with you on the ribbon, it is the only concern, but the spirit of the camera is to shoot with the viewfinder. I never shoot using the screen and prefer it facing inwards. If I use it to check results after a shoot, I only open it half way now, which will hopefully not over stress the ribbon. Anyway, if the worst outcome is an expensive repair, not great, but worse things can happen in this life.

Nice video. Excuse my ignorance, but how do I determine whether a Fuji camera has high or low use? Thanks

Fujirumors says that there is no X-Pro4 in 2024 and they are usually trustworthy. An X-Pro4 with only the 40MP-Sensor and IBIS would make no sense, because you can have everything with an X-T5. Only a massive update to the capabilities of the optical viewfinder - especially for focusing with manual lenses - would be worth an upgrade from the X-Pro3. But I can't see this happen at the moment.

Fuji has clearly stated that they won't be a xpro 4
