Yeh. Don’t overstock tanks even with lots of water changes and filtration. It’s unnecessary and a bit bit cruel. And if it goes wrong there is less tolerance in the system to absorb your mistakes. Only the fish pay.

I’ll tell you a secret too. It sucks to mix a ton of saltwater every week and go through the process of topping off, removing lots of saltwater, adding lots of saltwater, removing filtration media, adding filtration media on a weekly basis.

Much easier to have a ton of coral, a few favorite compatible fish and a smaller tank. That way maintenance is a breeze and you spend more time enjoying the tank rather than a part time job maintaining it.

Yeah fish can die from overstocking even with everything else being perfect. Even if your fish doesn’t, they would still be stressed out like crazy and likely develop complications

As a marine fish keeper for years I can tell you its not true its not the filter etc but when fish get settled they grow they can bully each other when you are 5 years into this hobby youll want a easy to keep reef so less fish is more ...they will be more happy trust me and you wallet will be healthier I have lost tons of fish over the years due to stocking issues. Ps fish don't like each other!! and the shop will not turn away business.

I only keep about 7-10 in my 75g salt water. Combination of ground dwelling fish (goby’s) and schooling fish (chromis or tamer species damsels) and then some clowns and other fish for maintenance (fox face and rabbit fish for algae and glass anemone control). Def don’t want to overstock your tank

My families saltwater tank had two fish (ich killed the others.) Due to this our tank was actually low on nitrates and phosphates.
