I really needed this, I just graduated film school a few months ago, I felt confident enough to start production on my first feature, but sadly, due to health conditions from my lead actor that he didn't know about, we had to push the shoot on day 7 out of 17, and I've been a little aimless since then. This really helped reorient myself, thank you.

Which Hollywood director has the best success story?

Steven Spielberg is heavily rumored to have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Myself being a SSDI recipient with a formal diagnosis of ASD, I can attest that we autistics are obsessed with our interests to the point that they literally define our lives. Our scope of interest(s) can literally be all we want to do in life. For people with autism, engaging in our interest(s) is not some small hobby or even a 9-5; it's a pre-requisite for life. That said, if one of Steven Spielberg's interests is filmmaking, he's excelled at it because he treats it as a pre-requisite for living.

Another trait we autistics have is a very strong sense of identity; we are who we are (replete with a certain personality, refined tastes and unique perspective and mode of thinking), and we see everything through the lens of me. That said, we'd be highly disturbed if someone tried to make us the next [insert name here]. That would mean we have absolutely nothing to offer the world, as there can be no carbon copies of any one individual human being. While the world is busy trying to be the next [insert name here], we're too busy trying to be Ourselves.

Pair these two autistic traits with a creative mind that's hardwired to think differently, and you indeed have the [insert your full name here]. And you only get one of those.

You cannot become a success story by design; it is totally out of your hands and thinking otherwise will only bring you pain. However, framing filmmaking in general as a low probability career is also not correct, especially in this day and age. It will require absolute dedication and perseverance, mind you; if you are not able to cope with uncertainty and keep yourself moving forward even if after 10-15 years (or more) you still don’t have a career, then it probably is the wrong profession for you. It’s all about priorities.

We have to stop this nonsensical search for the “next” Spielberg!

There won’t be a next Spielberg, or a next Scorsese, or a next Hitchcock, or a next Kubrick, or whatever.

Let’s encourage originality and fresh voices, not force new artists to conform to the archetypes of stablished creative voices.

Being a director seems tough imo. Which is why I'd rather be a screenwriter and producer.

Also, I kinda want to be the James Cameron of TV.
