Reasons why I don’t believe in god

More specifically, why I don’t believe in the Christian god, but many of these can apply to all gods.

Not enough evidence
Pretty straightforward. If a god exists and wants me to know that he is real, he would provide more than just a set of old, inconsistent, mistranslated, morally questionable-at-best religious texts to tell me the rules of life.

Indoctrination
80-90% of people have the same religious beliefs as their parents
If no one could be taught religion until they are 18, the number of religious people would be far fewer

Awful things in the world
Sex trafficking
Murder
World Hunger

Intelligent design theory is flawed
Puddle analogy
Salt water example
Organs that are useless
99% of species that have ever existed are extinct

Contradictions in scripture

Evolution
The Big Bang

As an atheist living in a secular country where nobody gives a cuss about religion you have my sympathy sir.

I just want you to know how much I deeply appreciate what you are doing. I too am an atheist in the bible belt. In fact I'm in Chattanooga, so I'm right here with you. I just started listening to your podcast and so far (starting at the beginning) every single word you've said is spot on with how I feel and what I've been going through. I can't tell you what a relief it is to know I'm not alone, because living atheist here often makes it feel that way. Please don't stop what you're doing. Keep up the good work. We need you out here in Thumper Land. Thank you!!!

I always come back to this video to calm down my anxiety about Christianity. You have solid points that I’ve wondered about for the past year and a half. The whole thing is ludicrous when you think about it. Thank you so much for speaking up.

You are so brave for always putting these videos up and for dealing the ever constant flow of hate messages from "loving Christians"

I myself, am asking questions
and therefore I can relate to everything you're saying/questioning.
These are valid questions, we all should be asking.
when once, I just believed blindly because yes I was raised to do so.

You made some great points. I cant believe in a god that lets a little baby suffer that does not know anything about good and evil yet. Religious people will interpret the bible as they wish to strengthen their belief and weaken any other belief. They are free to believe what they wish but leave me out of it.

Great video. The Indoctrination (#2) section was most informative. I wholeheartedly agree that we have no choice in what we believe (#3). We are either convinced of a claim or we are NOT. Great summary of the endeavor of science (#7).

Here are my 10 facts as to why I have no reason to acknowledge the existence of gods.

I define atheism as suspending acknowledgement of the existence of gods until sufficient evidence can be presented. My position is that *_I have no good reason to acknowledge the existence of gods._*

1. I personally have never observed a god.
2. I have never encountered a person whom has claimed to have observed a god.
3. I know of no accounts of persons claiming to have observed a god that were willing or able to demonstrate or verify their observation for authenticity, accuracy, or validity.
4. I have never been presented a valid logical argument which also employed sound premises that lead deductively to a conclusion that a god(s) exists.
5. Of the 46 logical syllogisms I have encountered arguing for the existence of a god(s), I have found all to contain multiple fallacious or unsubstantiated premises.
6. I have never observed a phenomenon in which the existence of a god was a necessary antecedent for the known or probable explanation for the causation of that phenomenon.
7. Several proposed (and generally accepted) explanations for observable phenomena that were previously based on the agency of a god(s), have subsequently been replaced with rational, natural explanations, each substantiated with evidence that excluded the agency of a god(s). I have never encountered _vice versa._
8. I have never experienced the presence of a god through intercession of angels, divine revelation, the miraculous act of divinity, or any occurrence of a supernatural event.
9. Every phenomena that I have ever observed has *_emerged_* from necessary and sufficient antecedents over time without exception. In other words, I have never observed a phenomenon (entity, process, object, event, process, substance, system, or being) that was created _ex nihilo_ - that is instantaneously came into existence by the solitary volition of a deity.
10. All claims of a supernatural or divine nature that I have encountered have either been refuted to my satisfaction, or do not present as falsifiable.

ALL of these facts lead me to the only rational conclusion that concurs with the realities I have been presented - and that is the fact that there is *_no good reason_* for me to acknowledge the existence of a god.

I have heard often that atheism is the denial of the Abrahamic god. But denial is the active rejection of a substantiated fact once credible evidence has been presented. Atheism is simply withholding such acknowledgement until sufficient credible evidence is introduced. *_It is natural, rational, and prudent to be skeptical of unsubstatiated claims, especially extraordinary ones._*

The simplest way of explaining it for me is that I didn’t choose to be born. I didn’t choose to play this “game” with Satan while god apparently sits back while millions of children worldwide die every year.

I too am a non-believer living in the bible belt. I left over 40 years ago because even as a child, I could feel the oppression of it all. I went on about my life living in wonderful places like Arizona, Wyoming, and Missouri, and not running into that many Christians and most of my friends either being soft Christians or agnostic or atheist. It was never an issue until I came back to the south to help my mom recover from a stroke, and eventually through her transition.
Then I fell in love with a southern Baptist man. His whole family is Baptist. His son a baptist minister. I had forgotten the oppressiveness of it all. He is kind and loving and respects, or at least understands that I don’t share his same views. We don’t talk about our faith or lack there of, but it would be so fun to be with someone of like spiritual mind because there’s so much interesting information out there to talk about. I have some atheist girlfriends I connect with, so I don’t feel totally isolated, but it is different down here for sure. In fact, I think when the Bible was referring to hell, they meant the south. 😂😂

There are videos on YT of people who went the other way: atheist to guess they discovered something good enough to make them believe.

You made great points. For me, I think something out there is real. I had experiments with spirits and such.

Good stuff. A big reason for me is the belief of 2 supernatural realms (heaven/hell) that inhabit human souls for eternity and have dictators “God” and “Satan” as their heads. Hope I’m not the only person that has spent a few minutes thinking about that and realize how absurd that belief is. Furthermore, if heaven is real and I make it and a close family member or friend is not there how would be able to understand that if there isn’t any negativity in heaven.
Ex. God: Jason your grandma is not here she’s burning in hell.
Jason: that is perfect god because you are perfect and grandma deserves hell because of your holy and perfect entrance requirements.

Umm no I would be upset and be eternally upset my grandma is burning in hell.

Reason #3 I can’t force myself to believe something I don’t……and just because I want something to be true doesn’t make it true. Well ok, the first part of this is reasonable….. you have a free will to believe or not to believe and God most definitely wants your belief to be genuine and from the heart- a personal choice on your part! But as for the second part of #3 you have to agree to the opposite which is that just because you want something to be false doesnt make it false 😁!

Number #3 is the reason … there is no way someone would believe in god if he wasn’t chosen ! It’s tough !

In the end, regardless of all the particular, specific reasons we atheists don't believe, it ultimately all boils down to whether one has a personal regard for the truth. I realize that sounds incredibly condescending and pretentious, but honestly pursuing the truth means doing so regardless of how it may alter our preconceived notions. As the great Sam Harris once said, "I don't want to be wrong one more minute than I have to be!"

I’ve never read another book that makes an explicit reference to horse semen. Indeed I know of no other.
As such the book in question is, at times, mildly entertaining reading. But certainly not to be taken seriously, much less as any kind of moral code
