How NATO targeting differs from Russia

NATO does not drop bombs indiscriminately. All targets, including targets involving troops in contact are run through a targeting center at the JOC. There, a team of lawyers decides if a the target has "Military Necessity," follows the "Rules of Engagement" and is not violating STAR. This is applied during every phase of the intelligence cycle. For more information on how targets re selected, read JCS 3-84 "Legal Support"

It's almost like journalists without a background of service, or security studies at least, are about as accurate as Russian munitions.

The part about not being able to return fire reminds me of that VRchat interview with a guy who was a gunner on an Ac130 or something similar. He talked about how he basically had to watch soldiers be fired upon and couldn’t help them because someone had to approve support and the enemy were using civilians as a shield so they knew they were safe for the moment

I know someone that worked for the RAF due to his test scores in selection he got picked to work in the drone targeting and assessment section after doing that for a few years he was asked/transferred to help out at GCHQ and this is the max he can tell his mother

That’s weird, all these complicated legal processes and billions on guided weapons and we still managed to kill 100k plus civilians in Iraq.

This actually happened to me during my second tour in Iraq. We were ordered by some a hole not to return fire, while we were under direct enemy fire, because it was in the vicinity of a mosque of historic value.

While I do not want to equivalize NATO and Russian targeting, it's not like NATO doesn't miscalculate long range attack/fire support. Much less than Russia, definitely, and probably not intentionally. Still, civilian casualties (sometimes even only civilian casualties) do happen, just would like to ask you to keep that in mind.

I’m US military and I have a story that highlights this, without violating OPSEC, there were ISIS fighters that got targeted by an Apache. They get blown away and then more ISIS fighters came to help the wounded. The pilot is like “I can just send another hellfire and make even more dead ISIS” but a lawyer watching this live feed decided that because the ISIS fighters were no longer fighting and were only rendering aid to wounded they no longer qualified as valid targets.

Like literally targets are sometimes reassessed from one shot to the next.

Russian targeting process:

1) Where are the civilians hiding or congregating? Where is the humanitarian aid being distributed? What infrastructure do the civilians REALLY need?

2) Hit ALL of those places.

3a) Say you didn't do it.

3b) Say it was really a military target disguised as a civilian target.

3c) Threaten to hit more civilian targets.

Fun fact : over 1 million iraqis died when the US invaded, and as long as i know Russia didn't kill 1 million Ukrainians in this war.
And also don't forget the Yugoslav bombing run when the US and NATO used depleted Uranium bombs (illegal and WITHOUT UN permission) and they dropped it on civilians and civilian infrastructure.
