America, you need a preferential voting system like we do in Australia or other countries. Popularly known there as RANKED CHOICE VOTING. No spoilers, vote who you want, if they don't win, it goes to your next preference. That means politicians also get to see who voters prefer and therefore policy platforms they should think about adopting.
