How to Wear a Kippah (Yarmulke)

In Judaism, men customarily cover their heads with a skullcap as a sign of humility before God, though it is not mandated by law. In Hebrew, it is called a kippah; in Yiddish, a yarmulke. In Europe, the custom dates to the end of the 16th century.

Step 1: Fasten kippah to head
Fasten the kippah to your head with bobby pins or hair clips. Larger ones can sit on the head without fasteners, though they may fall off during intense activity. These are best for bald men.

Tip
When visiting a synagogue or attending a Jewish wedding or other ceremony, non-Jewish men may be given yarmulkes to wear for the service.

Step 2: For Orthodox men ...
Orthodox men generally wear the skullcap at all times.

Step 3: For Conservative men ...
Conservative men generally wear the kippah during prayer and at synagogue.

Step 4: For Reform men ...
For Reform men, the kippah is generally optional.

Step 5: Remove when bathing or swimming
When bathing or swimming, remove the kippah.

Step 6: Jewish women
Some Jewish women, mainly Reform, also wear the kippah.

Did You Know?
Some scholars believe the word yarmulke derives from the Aramaic for 'one who fears God.'

Hmmm... I need a male head... now, where to get one?

I think "head" would have sufficed for required things, since putting "female head" under optional implies that females who want to wear this optionally don't need a head which made me laugh :P

Thanks for uploading this instructional video. I find it enjoyable to learn new things, especially something as important and symbolic as a yarmulke. I enjoy the video's when my dyslexia interferes with reading. Also, I am a Christian middle aged female in the PNW in case anyone is tracking demographics. And those eager to cite a 'fail', I think you are anxious because that word is stuck in your conscience. How bout you make a nice video like this, you sound very confident.

Female heads ARE usually optional, after all.

Sitting at the airport saw someone with it on and thought "its so small....how does it say on? Is it like the alien face hugger?" This video cured my irrational fear of the little hats

@ARMOROID5000 1. the Yarmulka was a sign to G-d during a war that you were Jewish. According to Jewish tradition, Jews would wear any head covering, so that G-d could aid them against their enemies. Please be more respectful in wording when talking about someone else's religion.
2. Bald men wear larger yarmulkas. Ugandan and Ethiopian Jewish tribes also wear large yarmulkas as they do not have the resources to buy clips.
3. Jewish men would wear head wraps similar to what the bedouins wear.

Thank you. I became Hebrew Israelite 15 years ago and now I’ve transitioned into Orthodox Judaism.

women are allowed to wear kippah. I'm a woman and I wear Kippah.
its not common, but there's no book that says its forbidden. Kippah is just used as a reminder than god is always above you, or for some people, its reminder that you always have your family with you (like if you wear your mothers ring). Orthodox men say that women are more spiritual so they dont need a physical reminder. i strongly disagree with that. but whatever.

I’m a reform Jew and only wear it on certain special occasions. Most of the time I do without.

I love how they give a fun fact but they list it as a step. Like, Step 4: Some birds cannot fly.
