This was probably staged or at least semi-staged for some drama entertainment value though. I saw some non-Xfactor interview with him where he explained what happened and roughly said the producers heavily encouraged him to do all of this and that it would be good for him or something like that, and that he was thrown under the bus this way without him realizing it until Simon was ripping him apart.

There could be some truth to that but who knows. Thing is though, Simon already looks like he's prepared to unleash what we know happens even as Mason is walking onto to the stage and doesn't change from that throughout, but maybe that's just Simon or he simply never liked Mason, I never watched the show. But then after his performance when Mason rather gently say's "yo hold up" which could have been for anything, good or bad, the judges are already immediately all "Uh oh!" and looking at each other with great concern and over-animated. Why would they be like that before Mason even said anything negative? It just reeks of fake. Not bad though, very funny.
