What Are Phased Arrays?

Показать описание
This video introduces the concept of phased arrays. An array refers to multiple sensors, arranged in some configuration, that act together to produce a desired sensor pattern. With a phased array, we can electronically steer that pattern without having to physically move the array simply by adjusting the phase of the signals to each individual element.

Commonly, an array is made up of antennas like for wireless communication and radar, but the general concept can be applied to different elements as long as they measure or emit waves. For example, a speaker and microphone array that is used for sonar and acoustic imaging is a type of phased array. In each of these applications, we have to form a beam and we have to be able to move that beam around. And we can do that with phased array systems.

This was an EXCELLENT video! I am an antenna engineer and I wish I had seen this video back in graduate school. I couldn't visualize all the math back then but this video shows so much of the complex math in about 17 minutes. Well done sir.

This was excellent, I am an automotive technician that teaches ADAS operation, diagnostics and calibration. I appreciate this greatly.

Brian! You are so loved by engineers everywhere. Thank you.

If you're ever in Boston we'd love to have you come give a talk at our lab!

So far the best video about Phased Array Antenna. I wish I could have discovered it earlier. I always struggle to visualize antenna or radar related topics from theory. Thanks a lot for this series of video.

Brian, it would be really nice to move to your house for a few months and talk about control theory all day, every single day. But I have a family and I can't :(

Which software did you use to create the radiation pattern?

Amazing graphics. During transmission, is the same amount of electrical power sent to each antenna in the array? How much power? 1 mW/antenna?

The dark lines is where the signal has a high negative absolute value. The signal is low (near zero) between the white and dark strips.

can you elaborate on the difference in an optical phased array?

How can the context of forming a beam and moving the beam around be extended to microphones that are recording sound?
