The barrel as recovery is actually such a sick idea, I'd make it work kinda like Sonic spring. So that it becomes an interactable Item for a short time, and so that DK can act out of it to actually make it back to stage.

I've seen a few fan made characters that are completely fleshed out like this. With genius like this, it's a complete shame you can't add them to the game by normal means.
