What Did Medieval People Think of UFOs & Alien Life?

In the West, the Middle Ages was a superstitious time, a time when what was real and unreal became blurred. Dragons, witches, basilisks, and zombies were just some of the beasts that offered an ever-present threat to Christian society.

Is it any wonder then, that in a time when everything had a religious significance, any unexplained phenomenon in the skies was interpreted as either an omen, the manifestation of an angel or demon, or even a message from God himself? It was a time rich with mystery and wonder. Was it possible that the Medievals were not alone in the universe? Welcome to Medieval Madness!

That medieval Japanese drawing of a saucer is pretty ahead of its time…that’s interesting.

As someone interested in UFO's and medieval times, really enjoyed this 👍

When people see something they don't understand, they describe something they do understand. We still cannot be sure what the shields, wheels, crosses or chariots really were.

The sight of imagery suggestive of unearthly flying vehicles in medieval art has always fascinated me very much! Very much. There's no way I can know exactly what's being depicted, but obviously something very peculiar was seen.

Village Peasant1: Strange lights came over our pasture today!
Village Peasant2: What did they want?
Village Peasant1: Our cows apparently, they took them.
Village Peasant2: I guess we'll just die, if not from starvation than from our lords who owned those beeves.

It sounds like James IV might have encountered ball lightning. Probably a good thing he didn't touch it.

Idea for next video: What did Medieval folks think of nuclear fission?

Love your channel! Would love to see more content focused on Middle Age warfare if you get the chance. Maybe videos detailing specific battles or even just talking about the strategies that were used in war at the time💯

Tumbnail is the fresco from Dečani, Serbian medieval monastery. It still stands, and the fresco is beautiful and in fairly good condition(and thumbnail is one of two "spaceships" on it)

You could almost say that Medieval sightings of unidentified aerial phenomena are even more interesting than modern ones because the people of the time were unencumbered by the assumptions and baggage of modern times, interpreting them within the rather different knowledge base of the age.

8:39 "that look nothing like the clouds they have been claimed to be".

If I wasn't watching a video on UAP, it wouldn't occur to me that those are anything but clouds.

To me, they still look like clouds even in this context.

The painting has a page on Italian Wikipedia, "Fondazione di Santa Maria Maggiore".

I just realized aliens might have literal video of people doing their things in the middle ages.
How amazing would it be to see that video?

I think they are all UFOs. Not aliens or angels or spirits. Just UFOs. (Except for the comet).

"A bizarre incident in Perthshire was reported in the Annual Register of 1767. It described a pyramid-shaped object over the River Ericht that moved "with great speed and disappeared a little above Blairgowrie", leaving a trail of destruction that included a partly destroyed house and bridge". This incident was quoted in an article published in the Greenock Telegraph on 9th August 2020 entitled "UFO Special: The seven strangest unexplained sightings in Scotland's skies".
