For anyone who thinks upgrading to M8100 will reduce free stroke compered to M6100/M7100, it will not. The free stroke screw works but other way around. Free stroke of M6100/M7100 lever is the same as M8100 with screwed all the way in free stroke screw. So compared to M6100/M7100 free stroke could be make longer with M8100 screw, not shorter. I have tested this with the same caliper (m520). Also the M7100 lever with replaced screw(Y-8VC98070) from M8100 works exactly the same as M8100.

If anyone is interested I have measured the free stroke at the end of the lever
BL-M8100 + BR-M520: free stroke = 17, 5 to 25mm
BL-M7100 with free stroke screw from 8100 + BR-M520: free stroke = 17, 5 to 25mm
BL-M7100 + BR-M520: free stroke = 17, 5mm
BL-M6100 + BR-M520: free stroke = 17, 5mm
BL-M8100 + MT7 Pro caliper: free stroke = 9, 5 to 13, 5mm
BL-M6100 + MT7 Pro caliper: free stroke = 9, 5mm
BL-M8100 + MT5 caliper: free stroke = 13 to 19, 5mm
BL-M8100 + MT5 caliper with MT7 pads: free stroke = 13 to 19, 5mm
Magura MT5 stock: free stroke: 29mm

Cheers!

I bought this levers and replaced my 401 levers on basic budget 4 calipers MT420 brakes. Such a cheap upgrade and what a big difference! They works GREAT!! And I learned how to bleed my brakes also as a bonus.

Those have a servowave mechanism, which makes them more bity (sensitive to module) but I am having same brake power with much less energy given from my fingers = less deathgrip!

Great video! Thank you.

@00:50 - 'BL' does not stand for 'brake lever', it stands for 'brake left' (hence the other side meaning 'brake right'). But, confusingly, it does mean 'brake lever' in the tick mark box!

I mounted the new BL-6100 on my old BR-M447 Caliper. I am happy with Servo Wave now. Better brake power and pressure point as the same as SLX 7000. I changed the old 59 hose to the new 90 hose. Good upgrade for my old brake. Very cheap. But best performance. Brake pads are not the typical Shimano B01S. I uses Quaxar P20.10 Semi Metallic. Discs are SM RT64M. Have fun with your new DEORE M6100 brakes! And thanks for video. In Germany we haven't such a fine channel for bike parts reviews.

I bought some deore 4 pot brakes a few days ago for my downhill bike, could not be happier with the price

Hey brother, thanks for the great video! Found both M6000 and M6100 with a tiny price difference and was unsure of which one to pick. Will definitely go with the M6100!!
Cheers from Brazil!

Thanks for providing the best detailed component reviews. I was undecided on which brakes to buy until I saw this video, I ended up purchasing the M6100, my bike came with entry level Tektro.

Excellent info as usual, I’m a big fan of Deore brakes.

My M6000 were great for 6 months or so then I started getting trouble with sticky caliper pistons (though they were a bit dodgy from the start). Something went wrong with the rear lever master cylinder too unfortunately. Shame because performance wise they were brilliant and great value for money. Went for the M7100 and they've been perfect so far. Hoping they last longer.

Great review. Small overview.
All brake handles are serviceable these days. All have the same braking power.

XT 8100 lever position knob + freestroke adjust with philips head (replace screw with inner allen head)
SLX 7100 lever position knob + freestroke adjust with special security bit (replace screw with inner allen head)
Deore 6100 lever position allan key, no freestroke adjust
XTR xc version = Deore 6100 in spec.

My advise: Deore for XC
More breaking power: Deore 4 piston

I have all different version on xc / trail bikes and notice no difference in braking performance.

Note: My brakes do not get very hot.
I bought the XT because I never had XT, but I have to truly conclude that it adds no value, well ok I do feel cool that my bike has XT 😉

Honestly the new Deore stuff is good enough. To save weight the only two parts I'd swap out is the crank and the cassette for the SLX group which would save about 300 grams.

SLX does have Free Stroke adjustment, all you need to unscrew the not adjustment bolt from SLX and replace it with the bolt from XT leveler.

There is one more important difference between BL-M6100 and BL-M8100. XT brake levers are made from thinner metal than these on regular Deore. Something like 1.5 mm vs 2 mm. It's significantly more probable you'll bend or brake those on XT.

These 12 speed brakes work well with the new Shimano Mineral oil filled rear derailleur 180mm cassette pokey tool 17.5 frame fork.. thing..

2:54 you said the olive and insert is in there already, surely you mean just the olive?

I sure hope 6100 will have enough power combined with a front 203 slx and metal pads for me, I'm 100kg. The 315's I have have trouble stopping me

basically they are similar to XT but without so many settings?

Much better clamp, this clamp actually makes sense.

thanks for the comparison, was looking for some cheap brake upgrade and just ordered the M6000 complete brake sets front & rear for 80 euro
the M6100 were 140 and are not that much better imo so the older M6000 looked like a better deal to me and still can get the ceramic icetech pads for better modulation if needed
they will probably be a big upgrade on my old but not much used 2008 Haibike Scream RC which I started riding on again and has Magura Julie that are impossible to bleed
it's an 100/100mm XC so these should be good enough for me, even the Magura Julie were ok for me but I started learning how to service my bike and don't like the super old Maguras poor servicability

Great vid I have the XT and SLX great breaks. These are of the same thread and at the price point I don't see a better system out there. Thanks for the vid.
