With Saudi Arabia and Iran making peace as part of a deal brokered by China, much has been made about the absence of the U.S. and what it means for U.S. hegemony. But what about the implications for the region? What might it look like in practice? Who are the potential spoilers? And why did this happen now? Also, what does it mean for the U.S. empire's greatest global partner, Europe?

A US attack drone killed Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani on 3 January 2020 near the Baghdad International Airport in Iraq while he was en route to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi.

Abdul-Mahdi had intended to discuss a diplomatic reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia with Soleimani on the morning of his death.

Abdul-Mahdi said that President Trump personally expressed gratitude to him for his efforts, giving the impression that the Iranian general was not in danger and could safely travel to Baghdad.

The US has to keep creating and maintaining enemies for its allies to defend against. The world has to be kept on a permanent war footing to justify its military spending, military alliances, and Complex (MICC). If the world is peaceful, its allies will find it hard to justify keeping US troops on their territory and paying the US to maintain them. There will be no one to sell weapons to.

Basically, peace, friendship, and cooperation in absolutely any corner of the planet outside of NATO/EU is a threat to the vultures. That is the short and sweet of the 'threat' that the Europeans are feeling.

I enjoyed listening to the interview and the calm balanced approach of Adnan. Saying anything positive about Iran is a cardinal sin among Iranians. I am originally from Iran and I always get a lot of push back when I try to make the case that it was the war that Saddam Hussein with the backing of most of the Gulf states, Europe and US and the pursuing sanctions that are the main root of the misery and suffering of the Iranians. Then, they hate me even more when I point out a fairer way to judge the situation in Iran is to compare Iran to Iraq/Syria/Libya/Venezuela that have been equally victims of the cruel neocons and I think Iranians are doing better than them. Finally, I totally lose my audience when I claim the seeming backwards ruling class of Iran were just 40 years ahead of their time when they decided to pivot to the east.
