Hey Grant!
After I learnt the basics of Linux, what really helped me take my skills to a higher level was doing CTF's on overthewire, Bandit is the easiest and is amazing in what you'll learn. I also completely moved from Windows to Linux Mint. If I had a need of using a windows OS i just use a VM.

Just learn basic linux, pass the lpic 1 exam to get 2 certs for the price of 1, see if you can get a job on a linux helpdesk to broaden your technical and troubleshooting skills, then take lpic 2 exam, learn freebsd basics and you may with some demonstrated ability land a cybersecurity job. where you will really learn how to hardcore your home system correctly.
