We'll be bringing you four lessons this week to teach you how to code. This is the first: a look at variables and basic data types. In future lessons we'll be looking at how to use these variables, creating more complex data types and logic statements, and bringing it all together to make a simple guessing game.

Be sure to check out all the lessons:

You're not exactly teaching us what each thing means...you need to explain what <html> <body> etc etc means before actually writing it, very confusing, not very easy to follow, not a very good "lesson"

Nice teaching. I could see what you're typing, i could hear what you're saying but i ain't understood shit.

you guys seem really good but the point of this is to teach basics and most people who need basics haven't done this before and have close to no knowledge. i was upset when the first thing you do is jump right into html body head stuff without explaining. people need to understand what you are teaching them or it wont make sense. also would help to link the downloads to the programs you are using.

I have used "Notepad++" and after every time you save, just click "Run" and select a browser. It pops up instantly. Really easy!

Hope this helps, as he doesn't explain what software to use at the start.

After you type the code into notepad or wherever; just do a Save As, save it with the .html tag at the end, then then double click it and BAM! it'll open in your web browser.

Hi, Evan, you're welcome! I write code. It's a cool way to make a living (though it's not all I do). Programming is fun and gives you a lot of power and options in the marketplace. It's a skill that can be monetized at any age. And there are so many distribution channels it's amazing. The sky's the limit. NO, not the sky, your imagination is the limit!

ok so this is cool and all cause it makes me feel like a badass, and ive seen up to lesson 4 of these, but why can't we start at the very basics?

Think of it like an english teacher teaching someone who has know idea what the english alphabet is to spell the word "the". I mean sure now he can spell that word but he can't apply it to anything nor has he learned anything transferable.

Do you get what Im saying?  I wanna know why we have to put things in like <html> of what each little piece does in a greater expansion of detail. Teach me the alphabet before you teach me how to spell.

Hey, small world! Yes, you can use any text editor you like. If you get more into programming and find yourself leaning toward a particular language, you can think about getting a text editor that formats automagically and does syntax highlighting. Those are really handy features. Some editors even sense what you are typing and offer quick completions. But to get started in any language, any text editor is fine.

So for all those that don't know the basics.... Please go ahead and look up what coding is and how it works for the pre-basics lol. Seriously, you may not understand all of it but knowing why you're coding and what the computer is doing to it in the first place will go a way to making you into a great Coder/Programmer/or even Hacker.

This is lesson 1 only for those that like to learn by seeing direct and immediate results lol, you will have to do a lot more research, reading, and coding down in the trenches before really understanding this stuff though.

Anyways, to do what he did in the video (and make it show up on your browser) you will have to save the Notes(file) as a .html and then Open it in your browser (like when you left click on a file and asks you where you want to open it), you should be able to choose the browser.
Also, if you are using the basic Notepad or similar, then please be sure to always save copies (have a .txt and a .html that you will change) because there is no undo or anything if you end up coding something passable but then change or delete by accident later on...

I think that will clarify things well enough... feel free to ask any other questions you have... I am not a pro-coder or anything either. I just started this stuff about a year ago, but have a pretty good understanding of the concepts, but I think my newbishness is valuable in understanding where other newbies are coming from and helping them to understand how to do more...

Could you do a video explaining the absolute basics? Like what <html> <body> actually means. Great video though, now I know what to expect to learn after the words

If I knew your name, I'd seriously thanked you in way you would want. I cannot really explain how glad I am :D

I have to agree with @TheNobletan -- I'm a graphic designer and I even have a little bit of knowledge of code, but this is like 20 lessons ahead. You need to start at the beginning, and explain what each element is, and why it is what it is. It's like, why are you using parenthesis, and how do you structure the code etc. I do appreciate you doing this, though... although it feels like it's for someone who's already a beginner at this stuff.
